Wilkes offers Joe the farm manager's job. Jack drops in on Frank while Janie is there. Joe decides to offer the job to Matt, so he and Peggy can start a life with the twins coming.

Annie tells Jack to buy her a washing machine. Joe tells Henry that Matt will take the job. Bart shows up for dinner. Jameson tries to play Henry against Jack.

Frank asks Janie to marry him. Bart tells the family that Jack is rich from writing a best selling book. Bart and Jack look at Jameson's land and make an offer.

Janie tells Amos that she is getting married and Frank won't allow her to be a barmaid. Jameson tries to start a bidding war for his land. Jack visits Marian and kisses her.

The brewers are going to upgrade the Woolpack. Annie does not know how to use the new washing machine. Jack is jealous about the wedding of Janie and Frank. Marian is confused about Jack's feelings towards her.

Frank asks Jack to be best man. Joe is upset that Janie is marrying Frank. Marian is getting ready for her cruise. End of season one.

The annual Sheepdog Trials event has opened and grand dad is showing off his new suit. George Verney invites Wilks for dinner. "Trash" the hobo is stealing beer bottles. Hilly is selling non pedigree puppies. Jim is menacing Sharon.

Sharon has escaped from Jim and is hiding. People are searching for her now. Amos is concerned over the interest Wilks is giving Annie since she turned down Amos proposal. Trash tries to sell the stolen bottles back to the Woolpack and is thrown out.

The Sugdens call the police. Jim gives up on Sharon, and is questioned by P.C. Ball. Sharon shows up at home with no explanation. Henry gets a telegram from Marion to say Jack is not with her. They all assumed he had gone on the cruise with her. Trash breaks into the mill house to sleep.

Jack comes back to find Trash living in his house. He lets him stay if he will clean himself up. Sharon is being secretive, and withdraws all her money from the bank. Jim forces his way into her house and makes a grab for her money. Wilks and the family can't go ahead with the partnership until Jack signs the papers.

Jack is trying to write another book. He sends Trash to the pub to buy more beer. Joe tells everyone that Sharon did not come home last night and she withdrew all of her savings. When Trash has money, they think he is guilty of abduction.

The vicar had offered Amos a barmaid to help him out, but when he found out she was just out of prison, Amos refused her. Gossip around the village is that Trash has done something with Sharon because he secretly has money from Jack.

The brewery want to make their pubs family friendly and Amos has a problem with it. Jack starts seeing Laura Verney and Joe wants to know what he plans to do about Marian.

Peggy is taken to hospital for bed rest. Sharon is still missing and Trash finds her watch near the river. Amos agrees to hire Alison, a friend of the vicars.

The police want to question Trash about the watch, and he seeks refuge at the vicarage. The vicar cautions Jack about having an affair with Laura Verney.

Jack is seen in the pub with Laura. Jack finds Trash drunk in his bed and goes for the doctor. While he is gone, Trash falls out the window.

The vicar has a talk with Frank and Janie about their upcoming wedding. Wilks is back from Australia and says that Marian is not coming back. Amos meets Alison, the new barmaid.

Matt brings Peggy home from hospital. Frank and Janie have a formal meeting with the vicar. Laura and Jack are in London together and her husband knows it. The grand opening of the Woolpack and no one shows up. Not even the brewery rep.

The police are looking for Jack to make sure he shows up at the inquest. Verney discusses his marital problems with vicar Ruskin. Frank wants to have a church wedding for Janie.

Jack and Laura argue and he goes back to the farm. Harry drives to London to catch Laura and Jack together with no result. Matt cuts his hand and it seems harmless to him. Wilks wants to join the fox hunt.

Trash's inquest results are in. Jack pays for his funeral and no one shows up. Frank is being evicted by Verney because he refused to shoe his horses.

Jack has a humane interest in not keeping pigs. Matt and Henry try to talk him into it. Jack and Verney reach a fevered pitch in their relationship. Jack has gone to the newspapers, and Verney knows about Jack's affair with his wife.

Verney attacks Jack in the mill house, but why is Alison the barmaid getting involved? Amos has seen her going to the mill house. Laura is putting a distance in the affair.

A girl is asking in the village for the mill house. Apparently, her father was Trash, the tramp. Frank tells Janie that they don't have to cancel their honeymoon, even though they are broke.

Alison and Wilks become friends and Amos is uncomfortable with it. Annie takes Penny to meet Jack. Matt wards Jack off Penny to give Joe a chance at a girlfriend.

The eve of Frank and Janie's wedding. Penny is still at the mill house and Joe is nervous that Jack has worked his charm on her and she won't come back to Joe.

Wilks and Alison find a girl's shoe and assume it belongs to the missing Sharon. Penny does not show up for her fishing lesson from Joe and he assumes she is with Jack. Grandad Sam angers Matt.

Every time Joe meets a girl, Jack goes for her and he is fed up. He wants to leave home and Annie tries to talk him out of it. Jack assures him there is nothing going on. Jack intends to lodge a complaint about the inhumane treatment of pigs.

Penny rents a room from Beryl, Sharon's mother. Jim Latimer, the last person to see Sharon alive, takes an interest in her. Trash saw him with Sharon at the Abbey the day she disappeared, but he fell from a window and died before he had a chance to tell Jack.

The fire at Inglebrook has left Wilks homeless and Annie and the Vicar have offered him a bed. Jim asks Penny to go out with him, but she is hesitant. Peggy goes into labour with the twins.

The Skilbeck twins are born. Wilks proposes to Alison. Penny tells Annie and Beryl something Jim told her about Sharon's disappearance which leads to suspicion, also the fact that he starts going to church.

Jim Latimer sneaks into the mill house and asks Penny for a date. When she refuses, he tries to strangle her. Luckily the vicar and Jack are walking in the door, and the truth about Sharon's disappearance is finally uncovered.

Henry still intends to build a large pig enclosure at the farm. Peggy is in hospital with her babies, Sally and Sam. Matt is angry at all the extra work the pig farm will create for him.

Penny invites her school mates Gwen and David to stay at the mill. When they cut across the land, David finds a bit of ancient pottery. They call Bradford University to send someone out to look at it. Later, David uncovers a skull.

Gwen can't sleep in Penny's bed, so she asks Jack if she can sleep in his, as he will be up all night writing his new book. In the morning she sneaks out and David questions her about where she slept.

Gwen tries to get Buckley to stop the digging. Wilks is furious at the new tenants at the mill. The professor from the University shows up. Amos delivers a lot of alcohol to Wilks at the farm. David confronts Jack about Gwen.

Wilks gives Professor Winthrop one week to look for artifacts. Jack confronts David about getting a job. Buckley tries to pressure Winthrop to get off the land so he can start work on the pig sheds.

Buckley tells his bulldozer driver to start digging and pretend he can't hear the protesters. A girl almost dies because of it. Joe wants to sell his share in the farm and buy a motorcycle. David starts work on the farm today.

Wilks finds out why the accident happened. Jack advises him to take up farming as a hobby. Janie and Frank show up early for Jack's party and David comments that she is wearing a nice costume. She runs out crying.

Joe proposes to Penny and she laughs at him. He storms off and goes missing. David and Gwen have a fight, but he promises to go back to work if she stays. Henry tells Annie that he is re thinking the pig unit.

Amos is rude to a customer, who happens to work for the brewery. The man takes a keen interest in David's art and makes a deal with him. Sam finally goes to the doctor for his cough, and is shocked that there is a woman doctor now. Sam wants to be confirmed at church soon.

Liz Ruskin has been having back pains for a week and finally collapses. Phelps tells Amos to hire Penny as a receptionist. Dr. Grant clears out his office.

Penny breaks a date with Joe, and he spots her in the pub with Phelps. Matt brings the twins over for a visit. Dr. Scott orders Liz to bed rest and Penny looks after her. Dr. Scott's father comes for a visit and tries to get her to come back to London with him.

Phelps has brought his press agent to meet David at the Woolpack. The vicar has been told he won't be getting a new Curate. Penny explains everything about Phelps to Joe. Joe buys a motorbike. The doctor comes to dinner.

Phelps gets David to sign a contract with a promise of 150 pounds. Annie is annoyed by the motorbike. Jack is back from London. Phelps is going to introduce David to a famous art critic tonight.

Wilks interferes in the art deal with his opinions. The critic won't give him a good review now. David has a go at Wilks, goes home drunk, and finds Gwen in Jack's room.

Jack assures David there is nothing going on. Jack finds out that David has an exclusive contract with Phelps and makes him a new one. Wilks takes Joe and Penny to the races. Everyone is curious as to where Annie goes everyday.

Jack and Gwen look for David on the moors but he shows up drunk and passes out. Gwen asks Janie to make her a birthday cake. Word gets around and everyone shows up at the mill for a party. David and Gwen are going back to Wales.

Joe's driving test today. Penny thinks Joe is too close to her and asks for a break. Janie has an old friend, Carol over for tea, and her and Joe get reacquainted. Jack thinks Wilks is going to propose to his mother.

Janie and Carol want to put on a play. Joe goes to see Penny and she's gone. Jack gives Wilks advice on women. Joe and Carol go for a drink.

Amos holds interviews for a barmaid. One woman thinks he is too forward, and threatens to call the brewery. Jack goes behind Annie's back and visits the man she has been seeing. Amos gets a call from the brewery and is as white as a sheet. The archaeological dig is back on.

Joe thinks Annie is going to marry Wilks, and Jack thinks she is going to marry the man with the greenhouse. Annie sets them all straight. The brewery did not get a complaint after all. Wilks gets a letter from Alison, and Jack gets one from Penny.

Peggy brings the twins for a visit. Sam tells Amos that Alison is coming back. Doctor Scott's mother and friend Simon visit her. Simon asks the doctor to marry him.

Joe's motorbike has broken down again. Matt is having to repaint Hawthorn Cottage kitchen because Peggy is not happy with the colour. He has got it cheap from Amy Poslethwaite at the village shop. ITV.

Annie nurses baby Sam. Ronnie Crossthwaite turns up and he has come back to the village to sort out the sale of their house, He and Beryl moved to Hull after the death of Sharon. ITV.

A Hull removal van takes away the Crossthwaites belongings. Annie is left with the mess. Sam plays his flute for the twins. Henry is polishing his shoes with a shoe shine kit that his wife bought him the Christmas before she died. ITV.

Amos sees the article in the paper about the brewery takeover. He starts to panic. Alison tries to calm him down. Janie thinks that Frank is wasting his talents in the village just mending farm implements etc. ITV.

Edward calls to see Clare, she tells him that Peggy died of a hemorrhage - there is no warning. Joe and Jack can't believe it. the undertaker has been . Carol Benfield has called to see Janie who is very upset abut Peggy's death ITV.

Henry is depressed after attending Peggy's funeral ; Amos wonders about the twins ; he fishes for information from Henry and Henry finds this rude ; he shouts at him and walks out of the Woolpack. ITV.

Henry asks Matt what he discussed with Bob Molesworth ; Matt doesn't want to talk about it ; Henry has been making inquiries about Peggy's shares ; he tells Matt that he has inherited them. ITV.

Janie is fuming with Frank for taking the Sugdens to the Woolpack so soon after the funeral ; she thinks that it was disrespectful ; Henry talks to Jack about Matt ; he doesn't want Matt to move on. ITV.

Amy has been out early to look at Peggy's grave ; Henry sees her and gives her a lift in his car ; Frank wants to know why Carol walked out of the Woolpack when Joe walked in ; Janie asks Frank about his history. ITV.

Joe is helping put Amy in Henry's car ; Carol offers to help him by coming to Leeds ; Joe accepts her offer ; Alison is left looking after the shop ; she doesn't know where anything is. ITV.

Alison has organised the shop ; Joe helps her and meets Carol there ; Bob is trying to talk Matt round ; he doesn't really want the responsibility, but agrees to think about the job. ITV.

Sam has a cider in the pub ; he is joined by Henry ; Jack arrives back from London ; he is still reluctant to write his film script, but has been offered 30,000 to do it. ITV.

A moment after Matt has opened the parcel ; Sam finds it empty and realises that Peggy must have sent off for it for their wedding anniversary which should have been last week. ITV.

Joe has passed his motorbike test ; Sam thinks that Joe should be thinking about moving out of Emmerdale into his own place soon ; he suggests Hawthorn Cottage, but Annie is shocked by the suggestion. ITV.

Matt is packing the land rover ready to go to Scarborough ; the weather doesn't look good ; Annie, Sam and the twins go with him ; Carol arrives to help Joe, but he doesn't want to speak to her. ITV.

Matt is back from Scarborough ; he has had a good day ; Clare and Edward are waiting for Charlie at his house ; Clare is worried because Fred drinks ; Sam has a funny turn ; Annie has no sympathy for him. ITV.

Sam is feeling better ; Matt tells Annie about Carol's trip to Majorca and that Joe isn't going ; Annie doesn't really approve anyway ; Matt shows her an article in the paper with the headline 'Come home Charlie all is forgiven'. ITV.

Annie is making a fried breakfast and doing the washing ; Jack does a Tommy Cooper impression, but no one laughs ; Annie is in a flap because she is worried that she won't finish her housework before lunchtime. ITV.

Matt drives Hilda Latimer back to the farm ; Annie is just on her way out, but stays to look after her ; Hilda's new pink outfit that she has bought for the trial is covered in mud. ITV.

Sam Pearson is building a house. Amos Brearly is faced with a dissatisfied customer. Matt Skilbeck fulfills a promise to the vicar. ITV.
