Wogan changes from a post-watershed Saturday night show into a live, thrice-weekly series going out at prime time. Guests include Elton John and Tina Turner, but all eyes are on Terry as he slips and falls on the stage.

Terry hosts the second edition of his prime-time show the day after he'd won the TV Times "Personality of the Year" award for the seventh year running. Included is an update on the Children In Need appeal.

Terry ends his first week as a prime-time host by chatting to Hughie Green, Hazell Dean and Gina Lollobrigida.

George Best talks frankly to Terry about his alcoholism and his time in prison. Also on the show are Julie Walters, Richard Gordon and Ian Charleson.

The critics are already showing signs of getting restless with Terry's three-times-a-week format, as Terry deals with a member of the public slating his golf, and a song tribute from Leni Harper.

Arthur C. Clarke tells Terry that the monoliths in "2001" are like Swiss army knives, much to Terry and the audience's bafflement. Also on the show are Bonnie Langford, Lionel Fanthrope, Cyril Smith and Victor Spinetti.

Joan Armatrading performs her new single "Temptation", though Joan and her band appear to struggle to take the process of having to mime seriously. Also on the show are Liv Ullmann, Sir Michael Tippett and Frank Finlay.

Sam Harris, winner of US talent show "Star Search", sings "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and gets cross-legged on the sofa for a chat with Terry. Also on the show are Cynthia Lennon, Peter Stringfellow and Kit Fraser.

Bruce Grobbelaar answers Terry's assertion that goalkeepers are "eccentric", and confesses that they can sometimes be "daft". Also on the show are Paul Hogan, Matthew Kelly, Marius May and Paul Theroux.

Among Terry's guests are Heather Couper and Tom Conti, while Tears For Fears perform their new single, "Everybody Wants To Rule The World".

Wogan is still held in such high regard by the BBC that they don't broadcast the start of the night's live football match in order to stay with Terry. Guests keeping Manchester United and West Ham fans waiting include Nigel Havers.

In a packed show, guests include Pamela Sue Martin talking about playing Fallon in "Dynasty", Donald Sinden discussing his puppet in "Spitting Image", and north east club comedian Bobby Thompson performing a stand-up set.

Terry gets to interview Princess Anne, who tells Terry of the hazards of attending royal film premieres without having seen the movies first, what she'd do if royalty was abolished, and how she got a HGV driver's licence.

Lively talker Redmond O'Hanlon is cut off in mid-sentence when Terry needs to end the show before they run out of time. Also on the programme are Graeme Souness, Anna Ford and Edna O'Brien, with music from The Flying Pickets.

Christopher Lee discusses what it's like to still be known as "The Prince of Darkness", while there's a chance to hear two possible entries for the UK's "Song For Europe". Also among the guests are Lorraine Chase and Shirley Conran.

Terry presents two more possible songs to represent the UK in Eurovision, giving viewers a preview of the songs "Whether you like it or not." Also included on the show is Joan Rivers.

Phil Collins performs "One More Night" at the piano and chats to Terry about his busy schedule, including his recent tour in Japan, getting offered a part in Miami Vice (1984) and his experience at the Oscars.

Terry meets new "Breakfast Time" presenter Debbie Greenwood, and speaks to Frankie Howerd about his part in the war. Also on the show are Brian Glover, Jimmy Boyle and Dr. Hook, while tenor Robert White sings "Roses of Picardy".

Helen Mirren is among the guests, discussing her recent success in Cannes, how she hasn't bothered to dress up for the show, and reminding Terry of a time they shared a radio interview and she "couldn't get a word in edgeways".

Bob Hope receives a birthday cake from Terry ahead of his 82nd birthday. While in the studio, he talks about his career in showbusiness, his thoughts on politics, and whether he'll ever retire. Among the other guests are Duran Duran.

Evelyn Laye joins Terry to celebrate her 85th birthday, while cricketers Ian Botham and Allan Border are also on the show. Plus, there's a discussion with print unionist Brenda Dean, and Sparks perform their new track, "Change".

Prior to the next day's Live Aid (1985) concerts, Terry is joined by Bob Geldof and Nik Kershaw in the studio and Spandau Ballet via satellite link from their rehearsals at Wembley Stadium.

Kenneth Branagh discusses his performance in a theatre production of "Henry V" and his Irish background, while Irene Handl also joins Terry for a chat. Music is provided by Loose Ends.

Following tonight's episode of Wogan, the BBC are broadcasting the last in the current series of "Dallas". To help viewers get over what he calls the "emotional maelstrom", Terry chats to stars Linda Gray and Victoria Principal.

Five Star save the day by providing the music when The Smiths pull out of a scheduled appearance at late notice. Making up the chat side of things are Lesley-Anne Down, Nickolas Grace and cocktail shop boss Chrissie Vanstone-Walker.

A BBC strike pulls Wogan off the air for the evening, with the scheduled show replaced by a highlights package.

The show sees Terry take a "book train" to the Edinburgh Book Fair, chatting with writers including Terry Jones, Delia Smith, Michael Wood and Jonathan Miller. In the studio are John Houseman, Dusty Springfield and King.

Terry explores the Edinburgh Festival with guests including Rudolf Nureyev.

There's an odd atmosphere in the studio as Terry's audience are muted, then over responding to every slight joke. When guest Max Headroom asks how he gets an audience going, Terry responds: "You mean tonight? With considerable difficulty."

Terry's mission tonight is to travel to Liverpool and make the world's biggest pan of Scouse in support of Children In Need. Joining him on this mission are guests Victor Borge, Liza Goddard, Blancmange and twin bishops.

Cliff Richard joins Terry to perform his new single "She's So Beautiful", and discuss his views on Apartheid in South Africa. Also on the show are Nigel Hawthorne and female cricketer (plus daughter of Dennis) Sarah Potter.

Alan Whicker comes on the show in what he jokingly refers to as a "low night", with Terry agreeing he's there to make up the numbers. Included on a sparsely-filled edition are Rambo lookalikes and Womack and Womack.

"Since you've been on that chat show, so many television sets have been sold," Les Dawson tells Terry via satellite, "I've sold mine." Also interviewed remotely are Mel Gibson and Joanna Lumley, while studio guests include Gloria Gaynor.

With Wogan now running all year round, the inevitable had to happen: the first episode with a stand-in host. Selina Scott gives Terry a week off, and immediately finds herself being flirted with by one of the guests, Alain Prost.

In her second show as guest host, Selina Scott talks to Gerald Kaufman, Billy Bragg and Marie Helvin.

Selina Scott finishes her stint of guest hosting the show, and, worryingly for Terry, over 13 million tune in to see her do it. Her final guests include Prince Andrew, Jonathan Price, Russell Grant and Natasha Richardson.

Terry returns from holiday to interview guests including Sharon Gless, Wendy Richard and Baroness Nina van Pallandt.

A planned show with Priscilla Presley, Elleston Trevor and Grace Jones is cancelled and replaced with a Wogan highlights package after Terry gets ill with food poisoning.

Terry has recovered enough from his bout of food poisoning to return to the show, chatting with Bernard Levin and Terence Conran. Grace Jones also gets to perform her postponed rendition of "Slave to the Rhythm".

Maya Angelou gives a charmingly eccentric interview, discussing her life, including how concerns over her sexuality led to her becoming pregnant at 16. Included among the other guests are Lynda Barron and belly dancer Tina Hobin.

Judi Dench talks about acting with her husband onscreen, whether comedy is harder than drama, and why she hasn't appeared in many films. Also appearing on the show are Noelle Walsh and Patricia Cockburn.

The easy-going Wogan show gets an unusually barbed interview, as Terry asks Priscilla Presley what Elvis ever saw in her, and gets defensive when she asks if he's read her book. Other guests that get a softer treatment include Carl Sagan.

With Eric Morecambe's widow Joan, plus Susan Wooldridge, Henry Cooper and double act Hale and Pace. Music is provided by Dee C. Lee, performing her new single "See The Day".

David Rappaport jokingly agrees with Terry that he suffers more than most from typecasting: "Yeah, I do 'cos I've got this really Cockney accent." Included among the other guests are Victoria Tennant and Jeremy Isaacs, head of Channel 4.

Terry presents the show on the same day the Daily Mirror print a story claiming he's getting "too big for his boots". Helping to keep Terry grounded are Ali MacGraw, Herbert Lom and Kiri Te Kanawa.

Terry chats with Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson, as he prophetically asks if they'd be happy if their baby ever went into acting. Also on the show are Michael Aldridge and wine expert Jancis Robinson.

Terry travels to Denver for a special Christmas Day episode with the cast of Dynasty, but it's one that falls foul of the critics - and Terry is in agreement.

Terry licks his wounds from the critical mauling he received from the Dynasty special, and gets Andrew Lloyd Webber to give him a preview of "The Phantom of the Opera".

A special late-night, hour-long edition of Wogan to celebrate its first year as a primetime series, and to see in the New Year. But Terry's guests are convinced that the BBC "champagne" is really ginger beer.
