Gordon has a tantrum about all the changes being made to the railway, but his new friend Nia, the steam engine from Kenya, helps him to take a fresh look at the situation.

When the boiler at the Animal Park on Sodor breaks down on a cold, snowy day, Thomas decides to take the animals to the Steamworks where they will be warm. However, snowdrifts on the line make the journey impossible, so he takes them instead to Tidmouth Sheds, where the engines are forced to spend the night with elephants, giraffes and an ostrich. When Sir Topham Hatt arrives at the shed in the morning, an ostrich steals his hat.

In Australia, Thomas tries to get to emergencies before Isla the doctor's plane and fails. But when a cyclone hits, Thomas is the ideal vehicle to get the doctor to an emergency in the eye of the storm.

Thomas offers a lift to a ranger named Ranger Jill while working in the Australian Rain Forest. Thomas is excited to learn from her about all the animals that live there, but he is too loud and impatient to be very useful.

Nia is a really clever engine and knows about all sorts of things, but when the Fat Controller asks her to take Annie and Clarabel and pick up passengers from Knapford Station to Thomas' Branch line, Nia has great trouble reading numbers so Annie and Clarabel teach her.

Bill and Ben's latest game involves hiding trucks and making other engines search for them.
