The plot centers around the Ming family during World War II when Shanghai is occupied by the Japanese. College student Ming Tai, the younger brother in the family, is devoted to fight against the invaders by joining secret agency and completed many missions. Elder brother Ming Lou works for the pro-Japanese government while hiding his true identity of the Communist. Through the many dangerous predicaments the family face, together, the Ming brothers and their sister Ming Jing, fight to bring down their enemies and end the occupation.

After being kidnapped by Wang Tian Feng in Hong Kong, Ming Tai is trained - against his will - in Wang's military school. When Ming Lou learns of this, he vows to bring his little brother back before he is turned into a spy. Ming Tai, however, is not interested in being rescued.

Ming Tai starts working on the streets for Wang Tian Feng, and is partnered to an eccentric but mysterious woman called Yu Man Li. Section Chief Nantian - working for the Japanese - makes a business offer to Ming Lou's assistant Ah Cheng.

Ming Tai and Yu Man Li work together for the first time on a mission in Chongqing, but soon find themselves in the midst of the Japanese invasion of the city. Much to Ming Tai's surprise, Yu Man Li uses the chaos as a way to escape.
