A bus carrying a number of people including Emma Stroud has been blown up by a bomb planted in her luggage by her son, Gilbert. Robin, investigating the case, is convinced that Gilbert is guilty. As he uncovers vital evidence he is knocked unconscious by the boy and imprisoned and threatened with a terrible death. By use of a stratagem he throws Gilbert into the same fate the insane youth had planned for Robin.

Robin goes to Paris to try to find two highly-insured emeralds belonging to Caroline Agoura, which ostensibly went overboard with her late husband, Paul. By working with Tou Tou, a clumsy Parisian second-story man, Robin learns that Agoura is not dead, but is a vague but notorious smuggler who uses the emeralds as collateral for his deals. Agoura learns of Scott's interest and attempts to have him killed by using his young protegee, Mirelle, and her ex-lover, Tanguy, to do his dirty work. Robin feigns death, and he and Tou Tou pull a dupe that almost gets Robin killed.
