As Tattie's impending nuptials to Tommy Austin grow closer, Grace grows desperate to scare him off. The Rayburns are enamored with their new color television set.

Grace is worried when she loses one of Tattie's presumably expensive earrings. Evelyn is upset when she learns Ida is dating their butcher.

When Tattie hires the Rayburns to reupholster a chair, Evelyn ends up designing a whole living room set for her. Meanwhile, Hannah is terrified after she sees The Birds against her mother's wishes.

When Walker is caught sneaking out at his boarding school, Tattie assumes it's because of a girl. Grace and Hannah follow Walker to a jazz club, where they find him playing in a band.

When Heschie gets a new job working overnights, the family realizes how much they need him around. Tattie doesn't want to admit that she needs glasses. Evelyn decides she wants to travel to help get business for the factory.

When Heschie thwarts a couple of burglars when they attempt to rob the factory, he becomes a local hero. Meanwhile, Hannah stresses on finding the perfect birthday present for her father

When the girls' school competes in a science fair with the boys' school, it becomes a battle of the sexes. Tommy Austin teaches Tattie about buying a car.

Walker feels guilt when Greer's son doesn't make it home from the war. Grace gives up sugar for lent, and Hannah learns to cook from Grandma Ida.

Hannah is upset when her favorite nun is leaving school. David makes a new friend in Tommy Austin and strikes up a business deal. Tattie sees a psychiatrist.

Grace's grandma Kiki visits and ends up causing a rift between the girls with her antisemitic comments.
