While Inspector Burden desperately tries to cope with his personal tragedy as well as console Celia Lawrence, the mother of the missing boy, DCI Wexford is convinced that he can nail the kidnapping of little John and the disappearance of Stella Rivers that he tried to solve years ago on Ivor Swan. While tightening the noose around Swan's neck Reg Wexford seems to forget the task at hand - to find little John Lawrence, and to find him alive.

After the long lost body of young Stella Rivers has been discovered, the investigation in the disappearance of little John Lawrence leads to a dying man, a dramatic confrontation between Wexford and Mike Burden, and a surprising conclusion. After all, a woman in her mid-forties who died as a virgin is not that common. His daughter's domestic problems force Wexford to escape to France, where he continues his investigation with the help of a French colleague and several dozen fresh oysters.

A trip to France, an opulent oyster dinner, a visit to the theatre and a hint by his wife Dora set Reg Wexford on the right track to solve Rhoda Comfrey's murder case. But the conclusion is so astonishing that it even leaves Wexford's superior officer at a loss for words.

A strange young man with a creepy mother are the witnesses in a murder case. Mike's investigation is hampered by the hero worship of the young man which escalates alarmingly.
