When Elizabeth Nightingale is murdered, DCI Wexford has to sort his way through quite a number of suspects - from the gardener to the household staff, to a permanent Dutch house guest, to the husband Quentin and the victim's brother and his wife. While trying to figure out what really happened on that fateful night that cost Elizabeth's life, Reg Wexford uncovers that the Nightingales' marriage was not as happy as it seemed and that there is a dark secret to be revealed.

Reg Wexford tries to get to the bottom of Elizabeth Nightingale's baffling murder. While he doesn't realize that he has held the clue to solving the case in his hand for quite some time, it's vital information provided by an old friend that sets him on the right track and lets him have a clearer picture. But then there is Elizabeth's will, and things become even more complicated.

Robert Hathall brings his mother home for a visit, and she finds her daughter-in-law murdered. Inspector Wexford ]is puzzled and annoyed by the attitude of both Hathall and his mother and some oddities in the physical evidence.

Reg Wexford becomes obsessed with Angela Hathall's murder case. He is sure he has his killer but he can't prove anything. All he has to go by is a hunch. And his suspect takes steps to get Wexford off his back. Soon, Wexford's job is on the line as DCC Griswold orders him to stop further investigation in the case. But Reg Wexford still has a few cards up his sleeve. When attractive Nancy Lake sets her eye on Wexford and tries to seduce him, things become complicated - will Wexford be able to resist the advances of a beautiful woman?
