Burney leaves home,to be replaced by his cousin Screech, and Rab is back with his mother. However Mary has kicked him out for feigning an epileptic fit rather than bring himself to say he loves her. Jamesie tries to show him the life of a single man and he picks up desperate divorcee Eva though his heart is not in it. Finally he ends up sleeping rough after the Social threaten to stop his mother's benefits for not declaring him.

A distraught Rab learns that his mother has died on the operating table and that Mary has a lodger,the young, handsome and vain Joe, who flirts openly with her - and Ella and half the womenfolk in Govan. After the pub regulars fail to scare him Joe finally moves on, leaving Mary and Rab to re-consumnate their love - in the back room of the crematorium after the funeral.

Rab and Jamesie hitch a lift with the delivery van and make a spiritual trip to Buckfast Abbey in Devon, where the wine comes from. Whilst in the confession box Jamesie meets up with Brother Frank, an old Govan resident who became a monk twenty years earlier when Ella left him for Jamesie and has sworn to get his revenge every day since. And he does, for when Jamesie comes to, he's taken holy orders.

Rab needs to wear glasses but is too vain so he cannot see the porn film Jamesie is showing whilst Mary and Ella are at a club watching a male stripper. Rab is annoyed with Mary for spending her evening in this way but when he finds out that she is worried about a possibly misdiagnosed smear test and her own mortality they are reconciled.

A supposedly dead Rab is brought into the mortuary where he accidentally kills the pathologist whilst a ned burgling Jamesie drops down dead. The two neighbours are charged with murder. The local Gaelic TV station takes up their cause but is more interested in Mary's favourite tartan so the locals take to the streets to secure the release of the Govan Two.

In order to persuade Rab and Jamesie to do a charity walk across Glencoe Norrie the barman bribes them with free drinks but after they have completed the walk,having fallen out over their camping skills and survived an encounter with the New Age travellers, they discover that the free drinks are not exactly what they had expected.

A Christmas special which finds Rab bewildered at the prospect of becoming a father-in-law as Gash announces his intention of getting married and Jamesie out on the streets as Ella trades him in for a younger model, the hunky Donny. Of course it is down to Rab to put everything back to normal again.
