The story 'Annamalai' revolves around the relationship between an honest servant Annamalai and his master and depicts their concern for each other.

Sambashivan finds a perfect match for his daughter and spends his life savings on her wedding. The groom's relatives demand a gold belt as part of the dowry. Shastri, Sambashivan's close friend buys a gold belt for her.

Dodu decides to make money to buy little things he fancies. He buys stamps and sells them but incurs a loss. Later, he comes up with a plan to sell something else.

Dr. Raman has a reputation of foreseeing his patient's future; life or death. He faces a strange predicament when his closest friend Gopal falls ill and he is compelled to predict Gopal's future.

'Four Rupees' is a delightful story of a lazy man, Ranga. It tells how Ranga falls into a situation and earns four rupees.

Ekambaram dies leaving the family's gold jewelry in his friend, Ram's custody till his son grows up. Ram financially supports Ekambaram's family and educates his children but on a condition.

A minister who happens to hold no portfolio, plans some unworthy schemes. His schemes to import Korean grass and investigate a child's death are thwarted by his superiors. Later, luck favors him.

Veena writes a story about a Chinese dentist. Veena's husband, Swami, being a good cook, mentions the details of the recipes served during the protagonist's wedding in the story.

Lawley Road is a charming story about a freelance journalist, who recalls the incidents of how he made a house in the New Extension in Malgudi.

The freelance journalist tells his friends how he struck a deal with the Municipality chairman and sells the statue of Frederick Lawley to the government as a National Trust and bought a new house.

The story dwells lightly on people's faith in superstitions and how by just twisting events and circumstances, everyone can be happy.

A talkative man dreams of becoming a flutist. He faces the curse of a mendicant he ignores when he is too busy practicing. His guru tells him that unless the mendicant forgives him, he can never play the flute again.

A farmer gets into a brawl with his master and accidentally pushes him into a well. He thinks that his master is dead and escapes but there is a twist in the tale.
