Rik is upset. The minister of Finance, mr. Gutt, has decided to replace pre-war money by new money, but the exchange new for old is limited to 2.000 Francs. Rik stands to lose a lot of money, but mother Liza convinces him to let the others exchange money for him. Pierre does not agree. Jef gets pulled into a scheme to sell worthless cloth labeled English Wool by Lou, a former associate of Rik, for which he uses the 2.000 Francs he was supposed to exchange for Rik.

Spencer, Nieke's English lover, finally figures out he's being set up to marry Nieke. As he's already married back home, his commander transfers him. The wedding is off. On top of that, Rik finds out he's going to be a grandfather ere long. Things between Pierre and Lili are souring, to the joy of Marleen.

Rik wants Nieke to marry Crazy Raymond, as Raymonds father, Crosseyed Tuur, is very wealthy - and very ill. The others are vehemently opposed. Mother Liza has someone else in mind : Stavros. Stavros, on the other hand, misinterprets the signals Liza is giving him, thinking she wants to marry him herself. He already pictures himself in charge of the café and treats Rik accordingly. Pierre is unhappy in the new job Lili got him, working for the Americans.

The Germans launch the Von Rundstedt Offensive, and are back in Belgium. Rik is terrified, and decides to flee to France. Jef and Ida immediately occupy his quarters. Rik is convinced a V1 bomb will hit the house. A soothsayeress told him so. Jef and Stavros are redecorating the new rooms of Nieke, but working together is far from easy. Pierre quits his job at the America hotel, and ends his relationship with Lili. Lili tries to win him back with tickets to the movies, but he refuses. That evening a V1 bomb hits the movie theatre. Pierre is convinced Lili must be one ...
