James Hadleigh is the man who has everything - wealth, status, and a beautiful wife. But the man who has everything has more to lose than most. When Hadleigh's wife mysteriously disappears, is it the beginning of the end?

Why is Hadleigh being followed? And why is his father-in-law, Charlie Caldwell, so anxious to stop him doing a deal with the benign philanthropist Sir Frank Pierce? Hadleigh isn't the only one with problems, however; his attractive young god-daughter, Joanna, is in love.

Hadleigh is increasingly obsessed not just with saving his home for himself, but preserving it for future generations. He goes on a treasure hunt which, if successful, would enable him to keep Melford. It takes him to Germany where he meets the sympathetic and beautiful Elfreda...

Jennifer is still in the States, but Hadleigh is constantly reminded of her by the presence of his god-daughter, with whom he has a similarly stormy relationship. Everyone seems to be trying to save both Melford and Hadleigh's marriage. But are their motives always what they seem?

Hadleigh receives an offer for Melford, and an emotional ultimatum from his wife. When it comes to the divorce court, not even Hadleigh's innate gallantry can prevent the proceedings from taking an unforeseen, and squalid, turn.

Hadleigh has his enemies, among them Gregory Baker, with whom he has crossed swords before and who now has a personal reason for wanting revenge. The bait he is offering is unusual and tempting, but Hadleigh is being tempted in more ways than one; the enigmatic Stella Clisby reappears. Coincidence?

Hadleigh leases Melford to a film production company. Before shooting has finished, Sutton has walked out, Joanna has walked out, and Lady Helen should have walked out. On the other the film's beautiful leading lady has walked into Hadleigh's life, and is determined to stay there on very attractive terms.

Hadleigh goes to Hong Kong to sell a rare diamond to a mysterious buyer. The middlemen are ruthless, and sometimes deadly. There are compensations, however; one is the exotic city itself, and another, equally exotic, is Hadleigh's guide and mentor - the enigmatic Kai Yin.

Hadleigh is desperate to keep his stables intact, but events are making it increasingly difficult. He badly needs a winner. Has he found one in Zena Sheridan, the stockbroker with beauty as well as brains?

Hadleigh tries to get away from it all in Cornwall, only to discover that attractive women - like trouble - can crop up anywhere, anytime!
