Hadleigh and Susan uncover a conspiracy when they investigate the new managing director of an old and trusted Yorkshire wine business which has been taken over by an American firm.

Hadleigh discovers the tall, attractive wife of a local industrialist draped across the bonnet of his car. But is it an accident, or is Sir Aubrey using his glamorous ex-model wife as bait?

Susan and three companions have been arrested by the military authorities in a Greek frontier town on trumped-up charges of subversive activities. Hadleigh has to apply all his ingenuity and determination to secure their release.

Bill Spence, a Westdale Gazette reporter, drunkenly insults Councillor Cleghorn in the pub. Susan realises Bill has a serious drinking problem.

When Hadleigh gives a dinner party at Milford Park, Sue is convinced that his motive is to persuade a certain Colonel and Mrs. Davie to sell their house to the local council. The whole evening proves to be fraught with tension.
