The Lawrences adjust to an addition to the family when 11-year-old Annie Cooper comes to live with them after the deaths of her parents, friends of Kate and Doug.

Buddy's boyfriend Zack pressures her to have sex, and she contemplates sleeping with him to keep him from turning to a pretty rival. Doug considers buying a sports car.

Nancy and Jeff move closer to remarriage. Annie's decision to take the Lawrence surname disturbs Buddy.

In the hospital for a physical, Kate befriends weary rock star Caddy Wilde, who's recovering from a drug overdose. Annie seeks Doug's acumen as a magician to help her learn tricks for school.

Nancy decides to find her own apartment, but Doug finds letting her go difficult; Willie becomes attracted to a married woman in his writing class.

The family decides to spend Thanksgiving at Hattie's farm, where Kate faces ghosts from the past and Buddy is intrigued by a local boy.

Audrey and Buddy are accused of cheating on an algebra test. The family is threatened by Bob Gantry, a criminal Doug sent to prison years ago.

Joe Alcott, Nancy's latest love interest, is accused of child abuse at his daycare center. A pet cat complicates Willie's life.

Buddy's invitation to a sorority becomes a sore point in her friendship with Audrey when Audrey isn't invited to join. Willie sleeps with Kate's musician friend, leading to a serious mother-son rift over casual sex.

Buddy develops a secret social life by sneaking into a disco. Annie dates an attractive but boring football player.

While studying for the bar exam, Nancy's attention is diverted by a charming and seemingly accident-prone neighbor.

Just as she begins teaching, Kate's challenged by trouble-making student Phillip Ogden. Annie loses Buddy's lucky ring.

Buddy's crush on her swimming coach leads to problems with Zack. Kate considers contacting a former flame.

Willie hires Bambi Deering, the stripper he met on his 21st birthday. Doug attempts to save hefty plumber's fees by repairing the household pipes himself.

Kate enraptures a visiting Russian composer. Buddy and Annie vie for Willie's old bedroom.
