Beth laments the lack of sexual spice in her marriage. When she hears the shower on, she assumes Dave is in there, undresses, and yanks open the curtain to reveal - Kenny. A series of discussions follows.

Eric and Mia are having problems, and Eric is so concerned about his performance that he's considering "enhancement." A defective sewer line allows for eavesdropping on comments that the eavesdroppers later regret hearing.

Dave has second thoughts when he wants to sell his blue mustang from college, and a creative spurt leads him to parlay some of his columns into a book.

The Barrys have problems when they wake up early: Eric takes the boys fishing. Mia and Beth shop for bargains. After taking Shel to the airport, Shel lets Dave borrow Shel's Mercedes but neglects to tell Dave some information.

Shel serves on a jury. Julie reunites with an ex-boyfriend. Mia takes Dave's creative writing lectures at a local college, forcing Dave to ruminate over how to tell her that she has no writing talent.

Beth helps out with the second grade candy sale. Kenny and Shel are making bets on everything. Julie exploits Tommy's school car wash in order to find dates.

Dave's first book gets published and it hurts everyone's feelings.

Eric's dad returns from a lengthy fishing trip with a woman named Helen. Eric is unhappy about it because he was expecting a puppy instead, so Dave and Beth intervene and try to put an end to the family friction.

The Barrys try to get healthier after Kenny has a heart attack. Dave keeps a food diary, Beth goads Dave into eating health food, and they even visit a morbid lawyer to write Dave's will.

Beth and Shel try to find someone who left a message on the Barrys answering machine in error while Dave looks for his missing laptop.

Eric and Mia's house catches fire, so Beth invites them to stay at the Barry house temporarily, to Dave's chagrin. Beth and Mia catch Eric and Julie in a thank-you kiss, and sparks fly. Shel spies on his girlfriend to see if she's cheating.

Kenny's boss Rupert wants to renegotiate Kenny's expiring contract and then fires him due to corporate downsizing. So Kenny's friends and mother help Kenny deal with a rough patch as he ponders his future.

The IRS can't find any proof that The Barrys have been legally married 16 years. Tommy's prank gives es Will a recurring tattoo.

Dave sees an alligator crawl onto his property and calls animal control, who can find no trace of the gator. When this happens more than once, people think that Dave is either drunk or delirious. Why does the alligator keep disappearing?

Beth suggests that everyone try something new and different, so Dave buys a telescope and takes up astronomy. Mia and Shel consider skydiving together. Jobless Kenny rejects a lucrative newspaper job.

A local advertising campaign turns Dave into a celebrity. But soon, Shel and Kenny feel alienated when Dave forgets a prior commitment that he made to them both.

On Valentine's Day, Shel introduces Dave to someone who can sell him a diamond to surprise Beth. But how trustworthy is this salesman?

Mia and Eric's fight spills over at the Barry's when he reveals he finds Beth's laugh annoying. Dave writes an angry letter to the electric company.

Shel gets jealous after his girlfriend Celia starts spending time with Beth. Eric and Mia invent a board game called Circus People.

Kenny and Shel get overshadowed by Dave's accomplishments, while Eric tries to solve the Barrys' rat infestation problem.

Shel has trouble with his inept receptionist and attends a car show with Dave and Eric, while Mia delves into astrology and Tommy plagiarizes one of Dave's columns for a school project.

Dave joins Kenny and Eric at the Miami Heat game in a luxury box after skipping a celebrity tennis game with Shel. There's an accident with a Dave impersonator that Shel recruited.

Eric builds Dave a sun deck.

A party for Shel's 42nd birthday is interrupted when one of Celia's patients has a medical emergency. When Shel sees how well she tends to her patients, he has doubts about how important his own career is.

Dave and Shel travel to Los Angeles, where Dave prompts his new bank and Shel visits his daughter Carly who resents having a long-distance father. Beth takes care of her sick mother.

Eric and Mia attend a 6-week premarital program at church, so Beth thinks it's time for the Barry family to attend church regularly while Dave's column about religion upsets dozens of readers and prompts the paper to demand a retraction.
