A patrol of the 10th Cavalry--an all-black unit of the US Army--headed by a sergeant is sent on a secret mission to bring a Commanche chief back to their fort to sign a peace treaty. As they are on the way back to the fort with the chief, they are ambushed by a group of Apaches who do not want such a treaty. The sergeant is killed, and Cpl. Smith--who despises Indians--takes command. The Apaches tell him they will let the soldiers go free if the Commanche chief is turned over to them; otherwise, they will all be killed.
