On the eve of the election for Prime Minister, tempers run high in a tiny village in Quebec.

Seraphin continues to run his timber business by exploiting the poor and taking over his father's position in the territorial government.

Plans for the railroad hit a snag. Seraphin gets shot while making his rounds in the forest--and finds a still.

Seraphin runs in the municipal election against the tavern keeper.

Seraphin becomes mayor. Donalda is gravely ill. Alexis runs for his life.

Alexis has been arrested for murder. Seraphin tries to stack the jury against Alexis, as he comes to trial.

Alexis has been injured in his escape to America and recuperates in a whorehouse. The coroner works to prove Seraphin murdered his father.

Donalda's wedding to the coroner approaches. Seraphin, plotting as always, goes to tell Alexis about it.

Alexis and Donalda hide away in the woods. They want to get married, but Seraphin has a plan to split them up and send Alexis back to the States.

Donalda asks Seraphin to clear her father's debt. He will do it, but only if she becomes his wife.
