In Henton village Tim is waiting for his business partner Harry who owes him money but does not appear. A sailor of a stranded soviet ship dies in the inn. Tim is surprised to find a clue to Harry's whereabouts in the man's belongings.

Tim finds Harry's car and in it Ruth Edwards's glasses. He visits the Edwards couple, Donald is a model ship aficionado. Car dealer Tupper wants to purchase Harry's car and offers Tim a surprisingly huge amount of money.

In searching for Harry Tim is working for a secret agency. One of the officials, Crombie, is killed in Tim's apartment. Harry's bride Helen brings Harry's suitcase with a picture of a ship. Tim buys the model of this ship from Edwards.

Henton doctor Killick agrees that Tim could be right: Maybe the Russian sailor is still alive. Tim notices that Helen is lying: She secretly photographs Tim's model ship and claims it's Harry's money that she uses to repay Harry's debt.

When hurt in a car accident Ruth tells Tim that Helen knows everything. Helen denies that. Bar owner Ma Dodworth tells Tim that car dealer Tupper is her contact. Tupper in turn gives Tim a number to reach Harry: It's Helen's phone.

Helen finally spills the truth and tells of the mess Harry is in. Harry personally calls Tim and wants to meet him in Henton harbor. It's a deadly set-up: Tim is cornered and attacked by the knife-wielding Lester.
