Angie returns from a photo shoot, resisting the advances of a photographer to support Nick as he writes and illustrates an article about Daphne and Sam's living arrangement. Sam is finding Rhonda too clinging and, back living with Daphne, is keen for a better relationship with her as he admits to a radio phone-in. Quite by accident Daphne hears the show, changing her attitude to Sam as a result.

Following a conversation with Rhonda Daphne has to accept that she is jealous of Sam having another girlfriend and, after a heart to heart with Angie and another letter from wise old Nanny Parker, she becomes increasingly less hostile, sharing a walk in the park, where they are photographed by Nick for his article. Angie meanwhile is resisting the attentions of Rob.

Daphne is starting to warm more and more to Sam, confiding in him a childhood trauma and complimenting him on his delicious omelette. Thus emboldened Sam breaks up with Rhonda, who does not take it well. Nick offers his photo story of Daphne and Sam to a tabloid editor but it is rejected and he finds himself having to make peace with Daphne.

Sam is curious as to where Daphne is sneaking off in the afternoons and follows her - discovering that she is taking driving lessons. He takes her for a surprise trip, playing golf and ends up having to carry her to the car when her back gives way. Angie is still fighting off Rob but a jealous Nick contrives to make her feel envious by introducing old flame Debbie as his new business backer.

Daphne is taking her driving test but needs Sam's help twice over - firstly to massage her back after her accident on the golf course and then to lend her his battered Mini as the driving instructor and his car are indisposed. Daphne passes with flying colours and she and Sam celebrate - perhaps unwisely in Daphne's case. Meanwhile Angie is still annoyed with Nick for allowing Debbie to be his backer.

Sam has a job to start but before that Daphne drives him to Cheltenham to meet Nanny Parker, with whom he gets on famously and who advises Daphne that she has a good man in him. On the way back they get lost in the fog having had to take a diversion and, as they are cuddling together for warmth, something happens that Sam has wanted for a long time...
