A drama about serial killers: the ultimate violent criminals who are surrounded by fear and mystique. When murders are not grounded in traditional motives and patterns of behavior, it takes a very particular kind of person to catch the serial killer; someone who knows and understands the killer's dark side and the fantasies that plague him.

The police are investigating the beating death of 24 year-old Monica Albreath whose body was found in a dumpster in the alley behind where she worked. Catherine isn't supposed to be working cases while the shooting investigation from her previous case clears her, but she can't help herself. She contacts Schaeffer - another no-no since he has yet to be deposed in her shooting case - to get his views and his take on a message found at the scene - 'I AM' written in the victim's blood. As the killer escalates, Catherine uses the investigation of the two victims to push Thomas to research her allegations further.

Catherine looks to glean more information from her stepfather; Catherine makes use of Thomas' profile, narrowing the search as she continues her dogged pursuit of the killer; Thomas and John discuss ways one might 'enter' a killer's mind.

Thomas' decision to stop working on active cases causes Catherine to investigate his past, leading her to an unexpected family history. Catherine takes Thomas to the scene of her childhood trauma where she finally reveals all the details that still haunt her.

Catherine distracts herself from Thomas' revelation about her mother by diving into a new case.

The killer invades another family; Thomas' profile causes Catherine to take on an unlikely role.

Thomas obsesses over an ominous letter that puts his career and family in jeopardy, while Catherine attempts to put the past behind her after a sudden personal loss.
