Ben Graham and Alisha Cole are successful personal injury lawyers. When Ben sees a half-naked man forced into a vehicle and subsequently into a flat across the street, he does the right thing and calls the police. They seem little interested and the reason is simple: it's the police who are holding and interrogating a suspected terrorist outside of the law. Ben Graham and Alisha Cole have now set themselves up in private practice, but business is quite slow. With a new outbreak of the corona x virus, they suspect that a pharmaceutical firm is trying to create panic in order to sell a possible vaccine. What they don't realize is that the company imported the virus accidentally when an employee was exposed to the disease and then transferred to England. The lawyers try to convince a company scientist, Professor Lewington, to go public.

Alisha and Ben are approached by a teacher who claims that a teenage student's recent suicide can be traced to a lack of discipline at the school. Turns out that the teacher was being less than honest and was being paid to tarnish the school's reputation. The man behind the campaign seems to be David Durrell, a promoter of private academies that spends nothing on special needs children allowing them to pocket government subsidies.

Alisha and Ben are approached by an immigration officer, Sarah Kendrick, who believes that something is amiss with the entry of Turkish nationals to the UK. Sarah sent and e-mail to her superior addressing her concerns but it was ignored. She believes that some immigration officers are on the take. As the lawyers look into the matter, they quickly conclude that there is a connection between Turkish mobsters and illegal migration and they suggest that Sarah go public. When she does so however, she finds herself suspended and before a disciplinary tribunal.

Alisha and Ben are approached by Alan Thorpe, a Member of Parliament and chairman of a Parliamentary select committee on alcohol marketing. His target is Griffin Distillers who he is convinced is deliberately marketing alcoholic beverage to 11-15 year olds. They are reticent to work for a politician but are swayed by Thorpe's sincerity and his own admission that he was once an alcoholic. As they look into the case, they learn that a rehabilitation center for underage alcoholics is funded by Griffin and that they are using reports from the center to shape their ad ...

Ben and Alisha receive an anonymous tip that a major waste disposal firm may be breaking environmental laws. The firm, Brucks, specializes in incinerating waste but they may be dumping the ash inappropriately and releasing toxic waste into the atmosphere. The case becomes particularly difficult when Alisha's father uses insider information to buy shares in Brucks and deposited some of the profits in her name. The government has little choice but to support Brucks given that landfill is no longer a reasonable option and it is the major incineration firm in the country....
