Dr. Damon is heading to Paris to lecture on psychology where he illustrates the powers of hypnosis. Returning early discovers his wife with another man, painter Charles Dyson. He decides to hypnotise him and get his wife to kill him.

Tommy Carter and girlfriend Julia Benton consider themselves part of the jet set. Money, however, is in short supply. Julia suggests Tommy fake his death in a car crash. When Julia gets the insurance Tommy finds himself out in the cold.

Newspaper editor Albert Lake sacks his assistant Larry Spence after passing a story to the Courier. Spence blackmails Lake's mistress Marie Dickson but strangles her. When Lake plays down the murder in the Sentinal, Spence blackmails him.
