When Lady Tithermite is murdered by her husband, Sir James, he reports her lost at sea, but Reeder suspects if the body could be found, murder could be proven.However, he looks for the corpse not in the ocean, but at the Tithermite estate.

Called to investigate the disappearance of Billingham, Managing Director of Telfers Trust, who has absconded with £150,000, Mr Reeder finds himself involved in a complex case of murder and extortion.

When the emeralds of Suleiman the Magnificent are stolen and the sentry guarding them dies from a snake bite. Mr Reeder has good reason to be grateful for the intuition of a woman.

Reeder becomes involved in a duel of wits with Lassard, a man who has accused the disowned son of Lord Sellington of stealing £5,000 destined for a charity. But trying to reconcile father and son results in tragedy.

When young PC Burnett discovers a bank robbery in progress and arrests Green, the bank manager. on what he believes to be overwhelming incriminating evidence, it is left to Mr Reeder to clear the man's name.

A Canadian confidence man, along with his gang (known as a "troupe"), are in London to pull off a big swindle, but without evidence, Reeder must watch and tally up clues while fighting his boss for permission to do so.

Twelve people - all with a private income - have disappeared from London over a period of twelve months. Assigned to investigate the latest disappearance, Mr Reeder finds himself racing against time to stop further people vanishing.
