1934: Ex-marine Dave Barrett returns from army service in China to his family farm outside of Cleary, Idaho. When gangster Frank Clinger and his gang rob the local bank killing a friend of Dave's, he sets out in pursuit.

Ma Gantry, the iron-willed matriarch of a crime family whose business is robbing trains, and definitely gives Dave a run for his money!

A criminal and his gang spring a member of the gang who's in police custody because he was the one who hid the money from one of their jobs. But the man is shot in the process so they take him to a nearby doctor. Dave brings in his father who was in an accident. The criminal holds them there till the doctor can work on his man. But someone is trying to make sure the man doesn't live.

Dave is upset by the murder of a friend from his Marine service and investigates the circumstances. He learns his buddy was involved in a theatrical troupe which is staging a comeback of former star Clara.

Sent to a brutal prison on trumped-up charges, Dave escapes from the encampment with a fellow prisoner, and they find themselves pursued by the crooked warden and his assistants.

Barrett goes after a gangster who's life is in danger because of double crossing some of his partners.

Barrett investigates when his good friend Paul Tate is critically injured in a blast; he meets a beautiful woman, Liz Butler, who is convinced that the bomb was meant to eliminate her.

A flamboyant Governor who's running for re-election hires Dave to protect him from an elusive assassin. The candidate fancies himself as a 'man of the people' and refuses to curtail his personal appearances, making Dave's job all the more difficult.

A psychotic man just out of prison blames Barrett for his incarceration and kidnaps his father James to exact his revenge.
