After three attempts on his life, Lew Burnett decides to remain 'dead' as his only means of staying alive. But one man, ex-mercenary soldier, Alan Crowe, doesn't believe that Lew is dead.

Having discovered Burnett's reasons for 'staying low'. Alan Crowe joins his friend on a trip to a power station under construction. But sad memories wait for construction boss - and danger interferes with reverie.

An embezzler in Switzerland badly needs Burnett's money to by a revolution. What's more, he could the secret behind the attempts on Lew's life. Crowe endeavours to hook the man with help of his mercenary friends.

Burnett's search for the man who wants to kill him leads him to Scotland where his former partner, Charlie Galbraith, has bought a Highland estate. Lew wonders where he found the money to do so?

When he was in Scotland earlier, the locals called Lew Burnett 'The Bridge Maker'. Now he's back to ask: Who's trying to kill me? He soon finds himself accused accused of corruption - and under sentence of death.

When a Detroit gang of organized criminals learn that Burnett is still alive, and can provide something they want, they send a contract killer to deal with him - a man who has an old score to settle with Burnett.

Still on the run and under cover of darkness, Lew Burnett and Alan Crowe break into Lew's business offices to put the firm's books under scrutiny - and see if they hold any clue as to their opponents.

The last link in the chain begins to fall into place, but Lew and Alan are in no position to complete the chain. They are wanted for murder - and all this as Lew's daughter Laura returns from Switzerland.
