It's been six months since anyone has seen Greg. After receiving a letter from him, Charles and Jenny travel to his last known location, finding a military organisation that they regard with suspicion.

With Jenny trying desperately to find him, Greg wanders upon a community run by children who have been stealing from their neighbours. But what are the children trying to hide, and what can Greg do to help them?

Charles and Hubert are reunited with Jenny, then Agnes. Unfortunately they take shelter in a community led by the domineering Brod. Wild dogs make escape impossible, but how long will Brod let them live if they don't do what he wants?

Charles is nearly killed on a solo expedition, narrowly saved from a pack of wild dogs by the nihilistic Richard Fenton. But with an outbreak of rabies and armed men taking no chances, will his luck hold out?

With the revelation that a steam train has been brought back to life, Charles makes it his mission to encourage communities to trade on the station. But will they be able to trust each other - or Charles?

Jenny discovers that a vet, Janet, is the mother of John. Conflict ensues as Charles wants to press on with the search for Greg, but Jenny insists on reuniting the mother and son. Yet how will John feel when he meets his mother?

Charles, Jenny and Hubert find a milling community that has given itself over to non-violence and contemplative worship. Will their presence challenge these values, and what secrets are the community hiding?

The group, now accompanied by Frank, search for a settlement that acts as home to Alec Campbell, an electronics expert. When they find Alec, they discover that he has no interest in using his vital skills, and they must persuade him.

Tempers are frayed when the travellers arrive at a former mining community and Frank's health worsens. When Charles tries to get Jenny to sleep with Alec to ensure his loyalty to the group, further resentments come to the surface.

Greg, travelling alone, has become paranoid and mistrustful of strangers. Will his fears ultimately be confirmed, and what secrets will he uncover as a result?

Charles travels to an old army camp after receiving an urgent message to meet Greg there. When he arrives, he finds no sign of Greg, but Anna with plans for a new government in Greg's name.

Charles, Hubert and Jenny take the steam train up to Scotland, where they plan to meet with Alec and Sam after electricity has been restored. But none of them have realised that Sam's plan all along was to sabotage it.
