Hanamichi Sakuragi, a high school gangster who know nothing about basketball start to get interested about it after a girl name Haruko, who make him fall in love adore that sport very much.

Hanamichi meets Kaede at the rooftop, due of misunderstanding Haruko hates him. What will he do to fix the relationship. Then, he got a fight with Akagi, Shohouku basketball captain.

Hanamichi basketball's fight with Gorilla still continue, with Haruko now is no his side. How he manage to win over a long time player of basketball, Akagi?

Hanamichi decides to join the basketball club, which Akagi is against. Sakuragi tries to find a way to get on Akagi's good side for Haruko's sake.

Hanamichi goes back to hanging with Yohei and his gang.

Coach Anzai comes into the scene.

The pick-up game match between the freshmen and upperclassmen continues to heat up.

Akagi learns from the captain of the Judo club, Aota, that the Judo club is plotting to recruit Hanamichi.

Hanamichi meets with Aota and is enticed into joining the judo club after being offered a photograph of Haruko.

Now that Hanamichi is serious about basketball, Akagi wants him to practice shooting layups, but all Hanamichi wants to do is dunk.

Hanamichi listens to Haruko lecture him in a morning practice session. Taking hints from Rukawa's form and Akagi's words, he finally makes a layup.

As Hanamichi practices alone in the gym, a Ryonan player drops in to scout Shohoku. He's so taken by Hanamichi that he leaks info on his own team.

Shohoku High's basketball team walks onto the court full of spirit.

The match begins and Shouhoku quickly lets the other opponent score.

Ryonan leads at halftime, but also realize they may have underestimated Shohoku. Sendoh notices the latent talent of Hanamichi, who enters the game.

With Akagi hurt, Hanamichi comes in with nine minutes to go. His unorthodox game on both ends completely throws Ryonan's coach for a loop.

Rukawa cuts Ryonan's lead to three. Ryonan's coach, anxious over Rukawa and Hanamichi, orders Uozumi to shut down Hanamichi, whose rebounding suffers.

Akagi returns and Hanamichi's rebounding recovers. Kogure gives Shohoku the lead but Sendoh takes it right back. Rukawa reenters with 2 minutes left.

With one minute left, Shohoku trails by four. After Rukawa scores two, Hanamichi gets a chance to put his stamp on the game with a dunk.

Haruko takes Hanamichi to buy his first pair of proper basketball shoes. Their features get him incredibly excited.

Basketball team member Ryota comes back after a fight put him in the hospital. He's beside himself when he thinks his crush Ayako is dating Hanamichi.

Hanamichi and Ryota engage in childish fight out of jealousy, but when Ryota confesses to Hanamichi about his crush on Ayako, they turn into buddies.

Mitsui's gang tries to sabotage the basketball team. They are unable to fight back, knowing the protocol that will ban them from the next tournament.

Rukawa lashes out at Mitsui's gang. Ryota hits one of Mitsui's flunkies. With the team in danger from all ends, some unlikely help arrives.

Hanamichi's gang arrives, turning the tables. Mitsui's gang loses the will to fight after Hanamichi and Yohei rain fury. Akagi comes and slaps Mitsui.

Hanamichi learns Mitsui was once on the team who came to Shohoku out of gratitude to Coach Anzai, but an early injury marked the start of his decline.

Mitsui's rivalry with Akagi had once pushed him to a crushing blow on his injured foot, demoralizing him to the point of leaving the basketball team.

A revitalized Mitsui joins the team for the Inter High prelims. Everyone is too excited too sleep. Filled with spirit, they face their first opponent.

The game vs. Miuradai starts with Hanamichi, Rukawa, Ryota and Mitsui on the bench out of punishment. Miuradai deems Akagi to be their sole threat.

Shohoku's punished players enter the game with Miuradai leading. Rukawa, Ryota and Mitsui excite the crowd as they quickly narrow the lead.

In the second half, Miuradai puts in Naito to stealthily rough up Hanamichi. Worse, Hanamichi gets called for fouls instead. Miuradai ties the game.

Naito manages to annoy Hanamichi into fouls. He then goes after Rukawa, but Rukawa immediately exposes Naito's weakness, helping Shohoku turn the tide.

Shohoku wins their first game, but Hanamichi is upset about fouling out. He fouls out of the next game too, prompting him to ask Akagi for advice.

Having fouled out of two straight games, Hanamichi is at his wits' end. Haruko proposes special morning practices, which he starts the very next day.

Hanamichi oversleeps on game day. On a failed shortcut, he finds Mitsui surrounded by a gang. He leaves them to Yohei and runs to the gym with Mitsui.

Hanamichi fouls out of the next two games as well. Although Shohoku has advanced to the quarterfinals, Hanamichi is mired in depression.

Shohoku plays against Shoyo, who pack the stands with team members giving well-coordinated cheers. Shohoku is gripped by a major case of nerves.

Shoyo takes control of the game, creating discord among Shohoku. Rukawa drives to basket and scores, getting Akagi and the others going again.

Reignited by Rukawa's remark, Shohoku finally plays to their potential. Ryota, despite his short height, cuts to the basket with blinding speed.

Ryota cuts into Shoyo's lead. Mitsui's 3-pointer ties it, but Shoyo regains the lead by halftime, with Hanagata dropping buckets.

Hanamichi's great rebounding rescues Shohoku. In the second half, he stays active on the boards. Rukawa's shot puts them ahead, but Shoyo responds.

Fujima's outstanding play gives Shoyo momentum. Shoyo's Hasegawa, who was once outclassed by Mitsui in middle school, yearns to beat Mitsui.

Hasegawa guards Mitsui tenaciously. With 10 minutes left, Shoyo leads by 6. Hanamichi picks up his fourth foul, putting him one away from fouling out.

Mitsui keeps scoring despite Hasegawa's intense defense. Shohoku cuts the gap to 3, but Hanamichi is unable to play assertively due to his four fouls.

With four fouls, Hanamichi is hamstrung. When Rukawa calls him out on not playing like himself, he bangs his head on the court and reasserts himself.

With 2:30 to go, the game is tied. Hanamichi drives headlong to the hoop. Undaunted by the two defenders in his way, he unleashes a thunderous dunk.

Hanamichi ruminates on his dunk-turned-foul. Takezono player Oda, Hanamichi's middle school classmate, injures his leg before his game against Kainan.

Oda tries to hide his leg injury in order to play against Kainan. Hanamichi blows off practice and heads down with his gang to Takezono.

Against Takezono, Kainan plays their bench team, which is still very good. Oda is hampered by his leg injury. Hanamichi encourages him not to give up.

Out of Shohoku, Kainan, Ryonan and Takezato, only two will make it to the nationals. Shohoku gets pumped up for the first game against Kainan.

Shohoku faces defending champion Kainan in the first round of finals. Kainan comes out strong, but Hanamichi counters with a fake and skillful shots.

Kainan puts third-year student Miyamasu into the game. Hanamichi is thrown off by Miyamasu's sickly demeanor and gets taken out of the game.

Shohoku is behind by 15, but Rukawa makes two shots to put them back on track. Akagi is injured, and a spirited Hanamichi gets back in the game.

Hanamichi tries to make up for Akagi's absence. His and Rukawa's efforts bring Shohoku to within five of Kainan with 1:30 to go in the first half.

With all eyes on him, Rukawa makes shot after shot and ties the game. Akagi comes off the bench in the second half, but his leg is not fully healed.

Kainan shooting guard Jin makes several three-pointers and increases Kainan's lead to 10. The exhausted Shohoku team calls for a timeout.

Shohoku lags behind with 10 minutes left in the game. As a last-ditch strategy, they quadruple-team Maki and put Hanamichi on Jin.

Shohoku trails by 4 with 4:30 left, and goes all-in. Kogure subs in for the exhausted Rukawa. With 45 seconds to go, Mitsui is at the end of the line.

Kainan leads by four with 45 seconds to go. Hanamichi makes a slam dunk, and looks to Mitsui for one more three-pointer to seal the win.

Hanamichi cannot get over the shock of losing. Rukawa blames himself for not having enough stamina as the two fight over who deserves the blame.

Hanamichi shaves his head to get a fresh start, but is not amused by his spectators. Anzai tries to flush out Hanamichi's weakness during practice.

Shohoku focuses on training Hanamichi since they can't afford to lose any more games. Hanamichi practices shooting hoops in silence without complaint.

The Ryonan vs. Kainan game starts. Everyone focuses their attention on the mystery rookie player Fukuda, but Hanamichi is surprised to see him again.

The first half is a scorcher. Sendoh's performance puts Ryonan ahead by 10 going into halftime, and the rookie Fukuda chips in 20 points of his own.

Uozumi leaves the game and Kainan takes the lead, but Sendoh latches onto Maki and the teams go neck and neck. Coach Anzai is sent to the hospital.

Hanamichi's quick actions save Anzai. On his way back from the hospital, he thinks about the time he failed to take his own father to the hospital.

The day of the Ryonan game finally arrives. Playing without a coach, Hanamichi is called out on a foul not usually committed at high school games.

Ryonan strikes first, but Hanamichi returns fire for Shohoku. Hanamichi makes a jump shot for the first time and causes a stir throughout the arena.

The game continues, tied at 2. Akagi is thrown off his game when his foot starts to ache after Uozumi knocks him down. Soon, Shohoku trails 13-4.

Akagi becomes distracted by his injured foot, and Shohoku trails by nine. Uozumi aggressively blocks Hanamichi and sends him crashing to the floor.

Hanamichi gets knocked down by Uozumi, but Yohei and the others prevent a fight from breaking out. Akagi shows complete recovery with a gorilla dunk.

Ryonan attacks Hanamichi's weak defense and scores basket after basket. Kogure subs for Hanamichi and Shohoku takes on a more aggressive stance.

Rukawa takes what he learned from the Kainan game and applies his full energy in the latter half of the game, while Hanamichi gets no chance to shine.

Rukawa is hitting his stride after strategically reserving his energy in the first half. The score is tied after he makes a three-pointer.

Rukawa keeps pace with Ryonan in the second half. Uozumi gets his fourth foul guarding Hanamichi. Shohoku builds a three-point lead.

Hanamichi takes Uozumi out with 10 minutes left in the game. Shohoku leads by three. A furious Uozumi cheers on the team from the bench.

Shohoku leads 53-46 with less than nine minutes left. Uozumi begs Coach Taoka to let him play, but the coach patiently waits for the right moment.

Ryonan is starting to lose their fighting spirit. Sendoh's exhaustion puts the whole team in deep crisis. Uozumi reenters the game with ferocity.

Uozumi starts to dominate Shohoku with his superb performance despite the 13-point deficit. All Shohoku players save for Rukawa have three fouls.

Ryonan continues to put the pressure on Shohoku. Meanwhile, Uozumi works on destroying Shohoku by picking at their anxieties one by one.

Shohoku is in trouble as Ryonan cuts their lead to seven with 3:18 remaining. Mitsui collapses from extreme fatigue.

With Mitsui out of the game, Uozumi and Sendoh cut Shohoku's lead down to one with astounding athleticism. Hanamichi begins to thrive under pressure.

Hanamichi helps his team to a one-point lead with 1:30 to go. Kogure leverages the past three years of training into a timely three-pointer.

Shohoku leads by four points with seconds on the clock. Ryonan puts up a fight but the game is all but over, the winner set to advance to nationals.

Shonan breaks out in celebration over their basketball team's achievement. In the meantime, Rukawa focuses on training more stoically than ever.

Hikoichi's older sister Yayoi writes an article on Sendoh, but her editor rejects it. Undeterred, she visits Ryonan to gather information.

Hanamichi visits Aiwa Academy to scout Moroboshi in a game against Meihou Tech. Rukawa reveals his intention to transfer to a school in the US.

Anzai opposes Rukawa's plans to go to America. Rukawa gives up on the idea after acknowledging how much others expect from him and Hanamichi.

Rukawa challenges Mitsui to a match in his pursuit to be Japan's top player. Meanwhile, the Fukazawa Athletic University coach takes notice of Akagi.

Akagi's team must make it to the quarterfinals at the nationals for him to attend Fukazawa Athletic University. Rukawa crushes Hanamichi in a match.

Akagi helps Hanamichi, Rukawa, Mitsui and Ryota study for the makeup exams they need to pass in order for them to play in the Inter High finals.

Hanamichi takes his friends' money for going to Hiroshima to pay for training camp, but Anzai tells Hanamichi to stay behind to practice alone.

Hanamichi stays behind to train with Anzai while Akagi and the others train in Shizuoka. Hanamichi gets assigned to practice shooting 20,000 hoops.

As Hanamichi tackles the 20,000-shot challenge, the other teammates have a practice game with Jousei High in Shizuoka. Shohoku ekes out a win.

Haruko invites Hanamichi out to a festival for a break from training. Hanamichi enjoys being out on date with her alone, but others soon join them.

Hanamichi completes his 20,000-shot training. The manager of the sporting goods store gives him a pair of basketball shoes before the nationals.

Hanamichi sets up a practice game with Shoyo's visiting players to show off his polished skills. Uozumi suddenly shows up, and Hanamichi gets benched.

Shohoku quickly takes the lead against the Shoyo-Ryonan team. Hanamichi misses a jump shot when he tries to show off the results of his training.

Hanamichi keeps floundering against his extremely skilled opponents. He then remembers his role as a re-bounder when Akagi puts him back in his place.

The mixed team with Shoyo's Fujima and Hanagata, and Ryonan's Uozumi, Sendoh and Fukuda, goes toe-to-toe with Shohoku. Hanamichi hits a jump shot.

Hanamichi dominates the opposing team with his new shooting skills. In the final moments of the game, he unleashes a final slam dunk.
