Adam, an ambitious cognitive science grad student, visits his closest friends, each of whom have unique experiences with his experimental process of creating and implanting artificial memories, called Shells.

While treating Feng's rare case of dementia, Adam meets the widowed man's daughter, Mabel. The two grow closer as the treatment progresses and their complicated histories and insecurities are shared with one another.

Feng's condition takes an unexpected turn and Darius returns in desperate need- leaving Adam caught at the center of his friends' dilemmas, pushing him to reveal truths he can no longer hide.

With Adam and Mabel's friendship left in question, Adam dedicates himself to one last solution that could change everything. Meanwhile, Mabel nurtures her father and resolves to help his uncertain condition.
