High school student Manta Oyamada enters a cemetery and meets Yoh Asakura, a boy who can talk to ghosts. Yoh reveals himself as a shaman, a human who can harness the power of spirits, such as the ghost of the legendary samurai Amidamaru.

Yoh wants Amidamaru to be his guardian spirit, but he refuses because he is waiting for his friend Mosuke.

Yoh meets an evil shaman named Tao Ren, who challenges him to a fight and ignites a series long rivalry.

Yoh confronts Ren again, still unable to achieve perfect unity.

Yoh's ruthless fiancee, Anna Kyoyama decides to coach him for the upcoming Shaman Fight.

Yoh and friends watch a movie about famous kung fu fighter Lee Pai-Long who died mysteriously 17 years ago. Jun confronts them with her jiangshi: Lee Pai-Long himself.

Yoh borrows Ryu's sword and fights with Pai-Long.

Ryu decides that he wants to become a Shaman too.

Yoh and Manta find a shaman with ice powers called HoroHoro and take him home.

Ryu is possessed by the ghost of the bandit Tokageroh, who wants revenge on Amidamaru for killing him 600 years ago.

Tokageroh forces Yoh into a fight and reveals Amidamaru's own Harusame.

Yoh is tested by his father Mikihisa Asakura. Ragou, the destiny star signaling the beginning of the Shaman Fight, appears in the sky.

Yoh is invited by a Shaman Fight priest named Silva for a test to be allowed in the Shaman Fight.

In the Shaman Fight, Yoh has his first fight against HoroHoro.

Yoh's second opponent is a creepy doctor with gruesome necromancy powers called Faust VIII.

Faust sends endless waves of skeletons that can regenerate, which causes Yoh to waste his furyoku as he repeatedly destroys them.

Yoh meets his grandfather Yohmei and asks for a way to get stronger in time for his fight with Ren.

A girl with a crush on Yoh named Tamao confronts Ryu and Manta, believing them to be threats to Yoh.

During their battle Ren unleashes his full Oversoul, which is bigger and stronger than Yoh's.

Yoh unleashes the full power of his oversoul against Ren and ends the fight in a draw which qualifies both to the next round.

Yoh fights the heavy metal duo Zenryou, who work for a mysterious villain named Hao.

Yoh, Manta, HoroHoro, Ryu and Bason enter the Tao family's main house to rescue Ren and Jun.

Frustrated by the failure of his jiangshi, En steps in to fight the heroes directly.

Yoh, Ren and the others try to figure out how En can be so improbably enormous, elongate his body, teleport, and regenerate.

Phase two of the Shaman Fight will take place in the United States, so the heroes depart in an airplane.

The airplane crashes in the western desert, and the heroes must begin their search.

Lyserg Diethel joins Yoh's group, as he seeks strong allies to defeat Hao and avenge his parents' deaths.

Lyserg tells Yoh's group the story of his parents' murders at Hao's hands.

Ryu tells the story of how he became a Shaman.

A disqualified Shaman named Krystal steals Milly's oracle bell.

Yoh and company head to an abandoned town haunted by playful spirits.

HoroHoro meets a shaman called Allen who protects the animals and trees of the forest.

Hao sends his minions after Yoh, but they are decimated by the X-Laws, an extremist group devoted to killing Hao and his followers.

Yoh's group reaches a hot spring where they discuss the X-Laws and Yoh's supposed blood ties to Hao.

Yoh's group is attacked by a vampire named Boris.

Boris is attacked by the X-Laws, who leave with their new recruit, Lyserg.

Yoh's group is joined by Chocolove, an unfunny comedian.

Yoh's group meets Lilirara, who bears a grudge regarding the last Shaman Fight 500 years ago.

Yoh's group is attacked by several of Hao's followers.

In another dimension, the group travels through the mind of Hao, where he shows them his abilities.

Hao orders the three girls to fight Yoh's group again to test their new strength.

Mikihisa explains the story behind Yoh and Hao's birth.

The X-Laws get into a fight with Team Niles.

Yoh's team gets into a fight with the Icemen.

Yoh's group finally reaches Patch Village as the Second Round begins, in which all shamans must form groups of three.

Gei Yin seeks revenge on Ren for rejecting his responsibilities as Tao's heir, which lead to her losing her position.

Ryu meets a girl called Anise who is being oppressed by her controlling fiancee, which happens to be Ryu's next opponent.

HoroHoro antagonizes a fanatical priest who believes kids like him are unworthy of the Shaman Fight.

Faust meets a family that happens to be his next opponents.

Ren's team faces Nyorai, who uses hypnotism to convert opponents into followers.

Yoh's group is attacked by a group specializing in exorcising evil spirits.

Mikihisa trains the group by having them write the names of things important to them on rice grains and spreading them around the vast desert.

Team Lily Five risks everything to face Hao.

Lyserg wishes to be bestowed with an angel by Jeanne, but may have to abandon Morphine.

Marco and Lyserg take Yoh's friends hostage as bait to entrap him.

The X-Laws engage in a massive battle against Hao's followers, as Jeanne opens the Gate of Babylon.

Everyone receives a stunning revelation about Hao's power.

Yoh and company learn how to make their oversouls stronger as they enter a forbidden forest.

In the other dimension, Hao and his followers are pursued by Yoh and company.

Lyserg rejoins Yoh's group as repentance for his behavior as an X-Laws member and they go after Hao.

Yoh catches up with Hao, and they start a fight in which Yoh ends up easily overpowered.

Enraged by Yoh's death, his friends fight for revenge against Hao, but he easily overpowers them until Manta reminds them that true strength does not come out of hatred.

Yoh's friends keep trying to defeat Hao. Amidamaru manages to retrieve Yoh's soul and revive him.

Yoh engages in one final battle against Hao, with the fate of humanity at stake.
