Nazi command watch the latest military newsreels. Stirlitz releases the anti-fascist pastor Schlag to use him in the interests of the intelligence later. "Eustace", a resident of Soviet intelligence, receives an encryption from the Center.

Stirlitz receives his instructions. With limited information he tries to work out who should be his target.

Stirlitz makes a risky trip to send a message back home, informing them of his decision to approach Himmler. Meanwhile the investigation into his activities moves forward.

Stirlitz' radio operator is killed and his wife identified as Russian. Himmler arranges Wolff's contact with the Allies. Stirlitz tries to approach Himmler but is prevented from doing so by Schellenberg who requests the use of the pastor.

Stirlitz recruits a new agent and General Wolff has an initial secret meeting with the Americans.

Stirlitz has to act fast so that past associations don't catch up with him.

Stirlitz's agent arrives in Switzerland
