Dianne Benedict, an aspiring judge in a small California town, meets her childhood sweetheart Mike Chulack who returns from a 10-year prison stint which complicates her relationship with her husband. Also bickering families upset the wedding plans of Kevin Cook and his Mexican-American fiancée, Melinda Lopez.

The town of Santa Rita is shaken by a murder and the police question those close to the victim. After Melinda gives Kevin a cold reception he apologizes with remorse. George Cook arranges a meeting with an exotic dancer.

Dianne receives death threats which complicate the investigation into Bruce's murder and she finds more than she bargained for in her late husband's files. Melinda accepts a date from a successful man that her father thinks highly of.

Dianne is put back under police protection when Detective Kuntz's investigation goes awry.

Mike scrambles when a photo from Kevin's bachelor party resurfaces. A romance blossoms between Kate and Kevin, and surprising details emerge from a case involving the theft of a man's outdoor plants.

Reports of Tommy Simmons' accident shatter Dianne's hopes of proving the innocence of Mike who is hiding out in a warehouse. Melinda sneaks off to Nevada with Kevin planning to marry.

When she discovers that the bank s about to foreclose on her home Dianne joins forces with construction contractor Richard McGill. Kate decides to help her sister by selling the Cadillac but is sidetracked in a mystery involving the death of a client. Melinda Lopez hopes to earn money for her college tuition by entering a Santa Rita beauty pageant.

Mike Chulack offers Dianne Benedict a way out of her dilemma, however she is not ready to make a decision. Kate Benedict continues to investigate the reported death of Emily. Judge Stinson charms beauty pageant contestants, including Melinda Lopez.

The discoveries of May's body and a rewritten will prompt Kate and Stinson to seek Emily Howell.
