King Gustaf III is increasingly unpopular, especially with a group of aristocrats who dislike him after the unsuccessful Russian war of 1788. They meet regularly under the leadership of general Pechlin to discuss a plan to assassinate the king and stage a coup. But the king know about Pechlin thanks to his spies and disregard him as an old fool.
