12-year-old Percy Jackson has just realized that his best friend, Grover, is half goat, defeated the Minotaur, and seen his mom die. Exhausted, he collapses on the porch of the Big House at Camp Half-Blood. When Percy wakes up, Grover shows him around Camp and introduces him to Annabeth, who had taken care of Percy while he was out. Percy and Annabeth get off to a bit of a rough start.

Annabeth teaches Percy more about demigods and monsters. They are interrupted by Clarisse, who insists on giving Percy an initiation ceremony. But, Clarisse's plans go wrong when Percy's demigod powers surface.

Percy, Annabeth, and all of the other campers at Camp Half-Blood work to improve their battle skills by playing a game of Capture the Flag. Unfortunately for Percy, Clarisse and the Ares cabin are included in the game. Still angry at Percy for humiliating her during initiation, Clarisse and her friends from the Ares cabin attack him. Percy, who has little fighting experience, is easily defeated by Clarisse. Annabeth almost steps in to help him, but something unexpected happens.

Percy, Annabeth, and Grover have just defeated Medusa. After fighting with Annabeth over whose fault meeting Medusa was, Percy has an idea of what to do with Medusa's decapitated head. Later on, after an incident at Waterland, Annabeth apologizes to Percy for freaking out on him. Percy learns more about Annabeth's past, as well as how Thalia died.

Percy wakes up in the camp infirmary with a huge welt on his hand from a pit scorpion bite. Like before, Annabeth was the one who took care of him while he was out. Percy explains to Annabeth what happened and how he got bitten by the scorpion. Once Percy's story is finished, he and Annabeth discuss their plans for the summer.
