Mikael Edman leaves his life as a poor backpacker in Anundsjö and, together with his daughter Malin, walks up towards Vilhelmina. He leaves the rest of the family behind him in the cemetery in Anundsjö: his wife and the three youngest children died in the dysentery in the spring. They walk through the spring-green landscape up to the new building Mikael bought above Vilhelmina. He has decided to become his own master, he will create a life for himself and his daughter without poverty and humiliation.

"The Near" - Mikael Edman builds his small house in Stornäs. The daughter Malin has recovered, but remains at Starburnäs, where she helps with the animals. She tries to get herself up to her father at Stornäs, but gets lost on the mountain. At the same time, Jon Olofsson comes to Staburnäs and wants help with the bear hunting: a great beast moves around the mountain and attacks everything alive. The Sami have also come out to hunt the bear. Concern for the girl is growing.

Mikael Edman has come a long way at the new house in Stornäs. His daughter Malin, who has stayed at Staburnäs, gets lost when she tries to get up to her father at the new building. At the same time, the bid goes for a bear to be on the mountain. The Sami chase it with the drive chain and the settlers go shell-out after the girl. Mikael Edman comes in close combat with the bear, who was shot dead by the Sami and kills it with his knife. A violent battle arises as to who the bear belongs to. Markus in Baktoberg finds Michael's knife in the bear. Malin is down at Tur ...

"The Trade Trip" - The long journey towards a new existence is over. Mikael Edman and his daughter Malin move into their new house in Stornäs. From Staburnäs, Mikael has received help with the harvest. He discovers Jon Olofsson with stealing hay. They quarrel about who is in charge of the land between the two new buildings. Mikael shows him the papers, which clarifies that he is the legal owner of the bogs where the Fatsjölid has always taken hay. Jon's sister Erika takes part for Mikael and Jon gets furious. When Mikael later works with a pond to the bog he is ...

Up on Stornäs life goes on. Mikael Edman has returned from the dreadful trading trip, where he was dying in the snowstorm. But Markus in Baktoberg saved him in the heat. The worst bumps and swelling of the battle have settled. Mikael and Markus go in their own way and chuckle at the thought of their game on the paddle wheel, where both went out of the game. Mark's clock has, of course, stopped, but it does nothing because he still cannot read the time.

A gathering of the whole parish to this year's largest church feast in Fatmomakke. At the church, which stands on the Sami old cult ground, you meet relatives and friends. The Priest arrives in company of other government officials. In midsummer, the wedding couples queue and the kids born during the winter are now to be baptized. In his tent horn, Tur Mickelsson waits for Mikael Edman.
