In 1936 Guangzhou, the Cheng family makes its wealth from opium dens, casinos, and nightclubs. Daughter Kau Mui attempts to persuade an honest bank owner to let her invest. Young man Tong Kat, a.k.a Sparerib, discovers he is unprepared for his new job as a police officer.

The Chengs vote that Siu Kit take over Kau Mui's casino. Sparerib runs into trouble while buying Sing's lottery ticket.

Sparerib puts Sing in a difficult position when he is pursued by the Chengs for shooting Siu Kit.

Siu Kit's shooter is dealt with. Sing's wife and sister return to Guangzhou.

The police force gains an opportunity for extra cash from Kau Mui. A typhoon hits Guangzhou.

Hei encourages Siu Hong to investigate Kau Mui. Sing accepts a job that lands him in hot water.

Sing opens a new restaurant with help from his friends. Sparerib's grandmother comes to live with him.

Fei Fan badmouths Sing to Tung Nei while harassing him at the station. Ching Ching's illness returns.

A favor for Kau Mui makes Sing decide if he is willing to break the law. Tung Nei asks for a divorce.
