Swedish farm boy Nils Holgersson drives his father to despair, constantly messing up his yard chores by neglect, wandering off and worse. Not superstitious, he steals the sugared bread his mother left for the kobold, but there really is one, whose raven helper the rascal just abused, and he risks the wrath of his king by miniaturizing the rascal. He just let the gate open, so most geese wandered off, except Martin, who now decides to try flying along with a wild flock. After failing to talk the kobold over, Nils ends up grabbing the rope around Martin's neck and ...

Nils's father Ole is worried he may have been too hard on apparent runaway Nils, but it's his girl admirer who actually sets out to search for him with her dog, alas clueless he's miniaturized and airborne. The house dwarf's master orders him to revert the knave's transformation, so he and his raven helper must find Nils fast. The geese leader Akka makes him forage on his own 'like them', not so easy for a farm-raised human. Thus he faces the fox Smirre, who hates and wants to eat both fowl and mini-human, but Nils manages to outsmart him.
