When DI Annie Guthrie is stabbed to death in an alleyway, Murphy cancels his holiday to work on the case. She was working undercover in the investigation of three murders of homeless women. Murphy in turn poses as homeless man to find what the press is calling the return of Jack the Ripper. He takes up residence in a homeless shelter and befriends a teen-aged refugee who may have witnessed one of the killings. He also has his eye on the shelter's resident counselor and religious advisor the Reverend William Norris.

DS Tommy Murphy is assigned to a drug squad headed by DS Nic Winters after one of Winters' team, DC Aaron Parmer, commits suicide. There is a concern that race may have played a part in his death. Soon after joining them, Murphy concludes that racism isn't the problem: he suspects Winters of skimming off some of the drugs they are seizing. It becomes apparent that the entire squad is on the take and when a second DC is killed, Murphy begins to wonder just to what extent Parmer's death was genuinely a suicide.

DS Murphy finds himself going undercover with an INTERPOL officer to smash a car smuggling ring run by Godfrey Raines along with his son and daughter. Murphy manages to convince Raines that he too is a car thief specializing in high-end vehicles. He soon realizes that INTERPOL is after something else when they delay arresting Raines and start asking him about arms shipments. Into the picture comes a Mr. Davidson, former MI6 and now working the shady side of arms trafficking. Murphy isn't convinced that Raines is involved and looks for a connection between the two ...

DS Tommy Murphy goes undercover at a defense biotechnology contractor that may be covering up an industrial accident. Specifically, a young child is found to have drowned but the mother believes he died as a result of a chemical agent in the pond near where the child was playing. Despite being warned off the case, the police decide to leave Murphy in place. When the family who helped the dead boy and his mother is executed, it is apparent that someone will stop at nothing to keep these secrets hidden.

DS Tommy Murphy goes undercover in a convent when a young nun apparently commits suicide and a second vanishes. Posing as a priest, he finds any number of suspects. The older nuns obviously have a secret and are in league with a pharmaceutical firm. Murphy suspects they may be participating in illegal or unauthorized drug trials in their African mission. There is a young African novice who has regular nightmares and is clearly afraid of something. Then there is the gardener/handyman who also has secrets. When the missing nun is found dead, the police must move quickly...

DS Tommy Murphy finds himself before a disciplinary review board after having shot a suspect during an arrest and soon out of the force completely. He approaches a psychologist, Mark Maddison, who runs a support group for individuals who have have lost someone to a violent crime but where the perpetrator is known but has never been convicted of the crime. In fact, Murphy is undercover as at least three murder suspects have been killed and all had some connection to a member of Maddison's group.
