Detective Vera Muller is appointed to help Chief of Police Alexandre Dias solve a string of sadistic murders. Charming lawyer Eduardo 'Edu' Borges joins the campaign team of Senator Otto Veiga.

Angela's boyfriend insists the investigation team must examine a lighter that he believes belongs to her killer. When the fingerprint results come in, Vera is led to the office of Senator Otto Veiga.

The police want to question Otto over a recent attack but Edu manages to deflect attention away from him. Dias and his team think they have found their suspect when they uncover some new CCTV footage.

After researching the tenacious new detective, Edu concocts a plan to position himself close to Vera's investigation. The police are led to the body of the latest victim. Otto's reputation's in ruins.

Dias and Vera's history puts a strain on their working relationship. Otto is under increasing pressure to name a successor. Assis suspects a leak within his team. Ivan finds himself in grave danger.

Dias becomes jealous of Edu when Silvia invites him to tea. A reporter goes to the police with a message from the serial killer and Edu begins to feel nervous. Dina warns Ray over Edu and the police fall into a trap set by the serial killer. Dias' daughter Tati, meanwhile, begins to suspect him of having an affair with Vera.

Silvia suggests Oto replace Assis with Edu. Vera sets a trap for the serial killer while Edu plans his next move. Celine admits she has misgivings about Edu and Dina goes to the police with some infomation. Very soon, Vera also becomes suspicous of Edu.

As Vera sets a trap for the serial killer, Edu plans his next move. Silvia makes a suggestion, Celina admits her misgivings, Dina goes to the police with infomation, and Vera's suspicions are aroused.

A stunned Vera reveals the contents of Ray's report to Dias, who calls Dina back in for questioning. Vera shares her suspicion that the killer is among the investigation team, but there's a setback . . .

Celina throws Dias out when he admits to having an affair with Vera. Dias gets a warrant to search Edu's house, and he and Vera bring Edu in for questioning. Vera tries to convince Ray to testify.

Tati and Celina discover a bomb inside Edu's backpack. Now that his daughter is involved, Dias wants to resign from the case, but Vera talks him round. Elda identifies the blood on Edu's boot.

Having taken a hostage, Edu makes demands of the investigation team as Dias holds a press conference and the police frantically search. The law is hot on his heels, but Edu is not without supporters.

As Edu's trial begins, he asks to defend himself, and soon the case is going in his favour. But Dias's team work hard to build a case against him and then the US consul arrives with a vital dossier . . .
