Seven young doctors begin their residencies at Seattle's Bayview Hospital. Katie clashes with her supervisor; Danny loses a patient and has difficulty breaking the news; and Harley tries to correct a senior physician's misdiagnosis.

Harley suspects a patient contracted a fatal disease while in Africa. Meanwhile, Tom takes Danny to a local college to give free exams; and Katie gets into trouble with her new take-charge attitude.

Harley and his patient are confined to a hermetically-sealed room to prevent the spread of a deadly virus. Max wins a day with the Seattle Mariners' Ken Griffey Jr. and Katie questions whether a breast-cancer patient needs a mastectomy.

Bayview doctors are divided over the treatment of two burn victims; Danny tries to apologize to to a patient's widow for not immediately informing her of her spouse's death; Patrick and Nia are convinced that music can solve their problems.

After surgically restoring a man's vision, doctors learn that he may lose his sight again; Clate insults Nia when she advises him to cancel a date with a patient she thinks is unstable; the staff takes turns babysitting Clate's son.

Clate tells his drug-addicted sister that he will raise his nephew as his own son; Katie and Tom take risky measures to save a surgeon injured in a train wreck; and Danny has trouble keeping track of the patients in the sleep lab.
