Mama's former beau shows up for a visit, looking handsomely distinguished. Mama assures Papa he has no reason to be jealous but Papa is envious of the man's success.

Nels develops a crush on a young lady leading him to do something foolish regarding tattoos. Mama is upset over her son's decision and family is in turmoil.

Marshall loses his job, blames Lars and threatens to harm him, much to the consternation of the family.

Mama Hansen tells her family a Christmas story that Mama recalls from her Norwegian childhood.

Mama decides to put off a needed operation because of the cost and her family's needs. But her children find out and intend that Mama has the surgical procedure.

Mama finds out the postman Mr. Larch can't retire because two men have something on him. Mama gets involved and solves the problem.

The family is excited and a little afraid when the irascible Uncle Chris come for a visit. He intends to stay with the Hansens so Mama tries to have everything just so.

Nels gets some dumbbells to improve his physique. Just as Nels is feeling good about improving his body Dagmar enters his baby photo in a contest.

The Hansens conclude the family needs to have more culture in their lives. A evening at the opera is planned but everything seems very confusing although they pretend otherwise .

After repeated urging from the children Mama agrees to buy new furniture. Mama takes her savings and heads to the department store where she tangles with a pickpocket. Mama gets a lesson from the ordeal.

The children's money needs overwhelm Papa so Mama so takes the kids to Aunt Sigrid's. The bachelor life does suit Papa while time in the country has the Hansens wistful for the city.

Dagmar has been asked to be a wedding attendant and is nervous about the responsibility. Mama offers her best advice to her daughter on what to expect and what to do.

Aunt Jenny arrives for a visit and departs with unexpected knowledge. The Hansens teach her the game of checkers and help Jenny understand the complexities of romance.

Mama meets a despondent actor who can't get a job. Mama gives him advice that helps change his luck.
