In 1920s England, two young cousins, Fanny and Linda, grow up amid the chaos of the family seat at Alconleigh.

As Louisa's coming out ball approaches, Fanny and Linda grow impatient for their own.

As Linda and Tony desperately try to obtain permission to marry, Fanny visits Polly at Hampton, where oddness abounds.

Linda announces her pregnancy, Fanny marries, and a death occurs which will alter Polly's future irreparably.

Lady Montdore's heir Cedric arrives, Jassy runs away, Polly returns from abroad, and Linda falls for a communist.

Cedric works to revitalize Lady Montdore, Lady Montdore and Polly reconcile, and Linda tries to help Christian's cause.

In Paris, Linda meets Fabrice de Sauveterre and an affair begins, but their happiness is soon threatened by war.

As war rages, Fanny and the Radletts reunite to live at Alconleigh, while Linda desperately awaits word from Fabrice.
