1979. Three years have passed. Solana now runs the Lambert print works, Alma is preparing for her lawyer's exams and Caroline is back from a long stay in North Africa. Life in the mining area is overshadowed by the steel crisis.

Alma, Solana and Caroline help Noémie and Alexis to escape to Rodolphe's place in Paris. At the same time, Alma leaves the Duparcq law firm. Solana wants to expand the print-works and seeks a bank loan for a new machine. Caroline has got her first contract as a home-based seamstress. She tells her friends she fell in love with a young photographer in Tangiers who is currently working at Denain. Solana understands that she's talking about Fadi, wanted by the police since his picture appeared in the newspapers.

Alma is concerned to learn that one of the three fathers is a killer. She discusses it with Rodolphe. Solana's loan application is refused by a Paris bank and she distances herself from Fadi to avoid hurting Caroline. But Caroline surprises her returning the camera to Fadi that he had given her. She quickly understands that both are intimately acquainted.

Solana and Caroline are reconciled. Caroline tries to win back Fadi, but he tells her it's over between them. He is finally arrested at Denain. Accused of having assaulted the police during the strike, he is immediately jailed. Didier asks Caroline to marry him, but still shocked by Fadi's arrest, she turns him down abruptly. Patrick Pourtis' sister arrives in Chambries to meet Solana.

Solana meets her aunt Emma. Caroline gets permission to visit Fadi and tells him she'll do everything possible to get him out of prison. She convinces Micheline and Roger to commit perjury and the young photographer is finally released on bail. Alma is very happy with Rodolphe but is obsessed by the identity of the owner of the bag left at Solana's place. It's almost exam time and Mercier tells her to be vigilant.

Fadi asks Caroline to marry him. Vildé takes a risk by advocating Solana's project to Vilson, who refuses it. During her oral exam, Alma isn't put off by Maître Duparcq and defends her ideas. Mercier offers to recruit her to prepare for the next elections. She also successfully defends Solana in her latest brush with Vilson.
