Inspector Halla and his wife arrive to their new summer home in Northern Savonia. Their welcoming night is cut short when a dead woman with red boots is discovered in a cellar.

Rumors spread fast in a small community and a local doctor Tikkanen raises more questions than answers. Soon inspector Halla learns that someone has confessed the murder to the police.

Martti Halla has to leave for Stockholm. In the meantime, Liisa learns some interesting things from her friends Raina and Juhamatti. It seems that the real murderer is still out there.

Inspector Halla is still on a work trip. Liisa is trying to cope with the dramatic events in Viinamäki and the long hours of writing her crime novel. The atmosphere is becoming increasingly tense.

Inspector Martti Halla has a theory and a suspect. But in this rainy and stormy night nothing is quite what it seems and Liisa suddenly finds herself in the middle of it all.

Martti Halla may have taken a leave of absence from work, but this time the work comes to him. In this night there's no sleep for anyone, since death has come to Savonia.
