Kenneth "Kentucky" Jones is a California Veterinarian. He and his wife had decided to adopt a Chinese boy. But during the process his wife passes away, causing him to have a change of heart about the adoption. That is until he receives a call saying the little boy is waiting for him at the airport.

After an exhausting night tending to a mare in foal, Kentucky is looking forward to some well deserved rest. Then Seldom reminds him it's Registration Day at the Elementary School for Ike to start 1st grade.

Ike has his first school boy crush at which causes Kentucky concerns. He doesn't get along with the little girl's father at all.

Ike is sensitive to Kentucky's emotions at the loss of his wife, which still causes him deep sorrow. Not wanting him to grieve anymore, he decides he needs a companion and contacts a matchmaking service in Chinatown.

A Social Worker expresses concerns after Ike accidentally falls from a pony. But Kentucky's problems don't end there. Seems she also disapproves of his female companion.

Not wanting to bring concerns about being a bad parent, Kentucky finds himself self-conscious about everything these days when it comes to Ike. In the past he was quick to anger, and his patience is now being tested again when pushed to the limits by neighbor Chub Baxter.

Ike becomes worried when he overhears a couple of friends of Kentucky's plotting to fix an upcoming race.

Kentucky is called to Ike's school's to discuss his singing ability. Because of Ike's off key singing, he is being denied to sing the National Anthem at an upcoming function.

Ike has been confined after a serious fall. While recuperating, he over hears Kentucky's conversation outside his room and thinks he's not going to make it through from his injury.

An surprise visitor to the ranch sends Seldom into a state of dread and misery when his ex-wife stops by.

Christmas at the Jones ranch and Kentucky is overwhelmed by all the Christmas spirit this year, especially with having his new son Ike to celebrate it with him.

Ike is excited about having a part in his school's production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". That is until he finds out that he has to kiss a girl.

The birds and bees have landed at the Jones Farm. When Ike brings a girl and her mare that's about to foal to the ranch, Kentucky finds opportunity knocking on this difficult part of being a parent.

Kentucky has to find a way to comfort Ike when he gets home sick for his home and country. It's made even harder when Kentucky has to take a trip where Ike can't go.

In order to impress his new love interest, Seldom brags about owning the Jones Ranch. When he confesses, softhearted Kentucky decides to help him pull it off.

Ike and his friend Paulie Clifton have their eyes on the same guitar in a pawn shop window. There's only one problem, and they both share it - the money to buy it.

When Seldom brings home a goat he won at an auction, Ike, still believing in the old ways of his homeland, thinks it's his ancestor Wong Lee.

With a high stakes horse race approaching, Kentucky decides to become trainer to a friend's horse.

When Ike brings home his straight A's report card, Kentucky, concentrating on a very important job, fails to give him the praise for his hard work he needs to and leaves the little boy feeling disappointed and hurt.

When Kentucky's uncle Henry comes to visit, Ike thinks he should be shown respect and honor due the elder of the family, like in his native homeland.

Ike's special gift of predicting winning horses at the race track doesn't go unnoticed, especially to a habitual gambler with bad luck.
