Rome, 30s. Nito Valdi leaves the prison, along with Toni, his friend. The two problems for a boss, who commits him to punish a debtor. Valdi goes to the hospital to threaten the victim, but his bedside is Carmen's daughter, whom she falls in love and promises to marry her. But the young man discovers Valdi's true nature and leaves him. Meanwhile NITO crazy for Carmen, after another refusal, tries to make her prostitute, forcing her to enter a brothel to repay her debts.

After the violence suffered, Carmen is treated by Dr. Gilsenti, Giulio offers him a home. Nito in the meantime kills Carmen's father. Giulio asks Carmen's hand, but is undecided. Nito finds her in the shop where she works, but Giulio just sees hunting. Giancarlo goes to the store and sees Carmen and falls in love but does not know that she is the woman loved by her brother Giulio, and after several courtesies she can spend a night with her. Carmen discovers that she is pregnant with Giancarlo.

Giancarlo meanwhile engaged in another woman decides to help Carmen abort, but she does not agree. He decides to pretend that the baby he is waiting for is Julius. Meanwhile, Elisa and Nito break out of passion. Elisa reveals to her family the relationship with Nito, which reacts very badly. Then Carmen reveals to Julius that the baby is not her, but he wants to help her anyway. Elisa goes home and reveals this to Nito's ambush, killing Giulio, her mother, the driver, and almost Giancarlo.

Elisa is dismissed by Nito because she is Jewish. Nito, is arrested for marrying the spouses. Elisa discovers she is pregnant. Giancarlo informs the family of Julius and his mother's killing. Elisa decides not to get aborted, while Carmen gives birth to a baby named Giulio. Giancarlo, wants to return to Rome for revenge for the loss of his brother and mother. Nito to escape from prison, threatens to kill Elisa, but is stopped. Nito is not executed by the commander.

Giancarlo, leader of the Partigian troops, during an ambush is hurt. Carmen's family fled to the countryside. Carmen will stay in town, but she will have to be careful about Nito threatening to deport her and her son, to save her, asks Don Ambrosio to marry her with Francesco. Elisa is in trouble and ends up in jail. After some facts Francesco is caught by Nito. Elisa shoots in her mouth and kills her. Nito wants to close the accounts with the past and find Bigiù. Carmen deceives the colonel and follows a complicated story.
