First of nine adventures of court psychiatrist Jane Halifax. An attractive woman falls in love with a colleague of Jane, but is found murdered soon afterwards. Halifax investigates.

While assessing a convicted murderer for the Parole Board, Jane is asked to provide Grief Counseling at an exclusive boys' school where a teacher has suddenly died.

Jane Halifax is called in to do a profile on a serial killer, dubbed the Make-Up Murderer.

Jane finds her misquoted criticism of a colleague's release of a mental patient, who murders again, leads to a patient of her own.

Two police detectives meet with their informant, but the meeting ends with informant being shot. Halifax is called in order to help in an internal investigation of the incident.

Ex-cop, Laurie Downes has displayed erratic behaviour and has taken the law into his own hands. Having assessed him as safe to be released on bail, Jane discovers that his actions have a specific purpose.

Jane rushes back from New Zealand where she has been lecturing, for the funeral of her best friend, Dr. Lisa Hardman.

After Jane Halifax claims that a man accused of stalking is little more than a pest, evidence stacks against him when the stalked woman is shot. The stalker is quickly arrested but Jane isn't convinced the police have got the right man.

On the tenth anniversary of her father's death, Jane is approached by an old friend of her father. She asks Jane to assess a thirteen year old girl accused of murdering an eight year old.

Jane Halifax comes across a chilling case when she suspects a client she is assessing might be caught up in a murder investigation.
