A farmer is bitten by a skunk that may have been rabid. While his wife seeks help, he remains at the farm with his young daughter and chains himself to a tree, should he become hydrophobic.

Haggard and seemingly crazy old prospector Calvin Lazarus strolls into an idyllic Californian town and immediately creates chaos when he insists upon digging up Main Street to search for gold. However, Lazarus secretly has a past association with the town. Years ago as a up and coming businessman, he was cheated and bankrupted by his partner, the town's bank's president.

Peter Fenton is a Communist agent working in this country as a civil engineer. He is convinced he will be promoted to a position that will give him access to important secret documents. Then he learns that a younger man has been appointed to the post, so he schemes to have the other man branded as a spy.
