The groom Buckley's mother Doris gives the couple a three karat stone for a ring. Stanley agrees to prove the setting but the purchase becomes more complicated then he anticipated.

Stanley has only one duty at the dinner, to give a memorable and loving speech. After he memorizes it Stanley arrives at the meal unaware of what lays in store for him.

In the excitement over the wedding preparations Stanley is sure that his birthday has been forgotten. His desire for a golf cart as a present appears unlikely but the family has actually planned a surprise party.

Kay asks her mother-in-law Doris advice about a recipe then goes to Ellie about the same item. Doris is offended when she finds out setting off a rivalry. Stanley tries to intervene which becomes a thankless task.

Buckley is fed up with Kay constantly comparing him with her father and lets his wife know. The newlyweds have a huge fight and Kay goes complaining to Stanley and Ellie. They try to stay neutral.

Stanley offers son Tommy boxed seats at a sports event but the boy would rather do something with Buckley. Stanley's feelings are hurt and wonders if both his kids prefer his son-in-law over their father.

With Kay married and Tommy busy with school Ellie finds herself with too much time on her hands. Ellie decides to get a job but when she tells Stanley he is not very encouraging.

Kay and Buckley have a serious argument but have very different versions of what occurred. Stanley attempts to act as peacemaker with the young couple but that only gets him trouble with Ellie.

Stanley is informed that Kay and Buckley are planning on purchasing a house. Stanley thinks the couple too young to be tied to a mortgage but Ellie tells him they are expecting a baby and Stanley changes his attitude.

Buckley's mother Doris is under the understanding that she's an heiress to a title and a Welsh castle. She hires Stanley to look into the matter and he is reluctant to give Doris the facts of the case.

Tommie and his friends have for a jazz combo but are still very inexperienced. Tommie talks dad Stanley into hiring his band for the yearly attorney's ball. Stanley is worried when he doesn't hear the music get any better.

Buckley tells Kay he and his buddies are off to bunk in a cabin for a fishing trip. But Kay finds out the guys are actually staying in a luxury lodge her suspicions run wild. Stanley tries to smooth things over.

When Stanley and Vern Hammerstock went to high school together, Vern was a skinny runt. Vern comes for a visit for the first time in more than 25 years. Suddenly, he's a muscular specimen. Stanley tries to figure out Vern's secret. As well, Vern and his wife have shortened their last name to Hammer.

Stanley and Ellie are looking forward to another evening over at Kay and Buckley's. Stanley's co-worker Wilkins says he read that parents should wait to be formerly invited. The Banks regretfully withdraw but the misunderstanding is cleared up.
