Set in Southwestern Germany in 1951, the American Military has found a new home in the conservative and tranquil town of Kaltenstein. This is a blessing for Mayor Strumm and his daughter Erika, but a curse for the Kastner farming family.

Trouble brews when Siegfried, the Mayor's son who was lost in captivity during the war, unexpectedly returns to Kaltenstein. He is ready to marry his fiancée Marie, who has promised to be faithful to him.

Siegfried Strumm returns completely unexpectedly from Russian captivity. And although he has changed through his experiences, Marie has to tell George that she will keep her promise and keep Siegfried's loyalty.

George doesn't want to give up Marie - he knows that she loves him. But Marie remains tough and verbally injures George in the presence of Siegfried in order to make her position clear. Siegfried also tries and helps to modernize the Kastners' farm.

Marie, who has chosen to be with George and go her own way, distances herself from Erika, who is trying to cope with bad news from the doctor. Meanwhile, Mayor Strumm's dark past is exposed to the public.

George's friends on the base and Marie fight to prove his innocence, but Marie begins to doubt that George is telling the truth.
