1747: a robbery and a murder shed a light on London's corrupt and inefficient justice system. Author Henry Fielding does some pro bono work in the courts, but he knows that the whole system needs to be reformed, against much resistance from some..

A crime wave hits 1877 New York, culminating in a string of jewellery store break-ins. Investigating the case, detective Byrnes finds some well-connected men are trying to stop him. He needs to use a dirty trick in order to win this one.

Rural Germany, 1922: A skeleton turns up that has been buried for ca. 10 years. When Inspector Bauer starts his inquiries, farmer Emcke confesses a murder. But what is Bauer supposed to do if he doubts a cast-iron confession such as this?

1932: when a conman fleeces businessmen and insurance companies in various Italian cities, a private investigator's chance encounter with an artistic nun leads to an early use of a police sketch, finally resulting in the conman's capture.

Amsterdam 1945: 20 years in prison for collaborating with the enemy, or a few years for art fraud? The police are not convinced van Meegeren is a genius forger, as he claims. They think he is just trying to avoid a much stiffer sentence.
